Summary<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade was signed by Noshu Jyu Yasumichi (\u6fc3\u5dde\u4f4f\u5eb7\u9053) in March, the 6th year of the Eicho era (1509: Late Muromachi Period). He belonged to Mino Senjuin (\u7f8e\u6fc3\u5343\u624b\u9662), which is one of the most famous schools during the late Nanbokucho-late Muromachi (Mid 14th-Early 16th century) period in Mino province (today’s Gifu prefecture). Noshu is another name for Mino province. According to available records, the maker’s Yasumichi lasted two generations. And this blade was created by the second-gen because he was especially active during\u00a0 Eisho era (1504-1521<\/strong>: Late Muromachi period). When this blade was created, Japan had a warring state period called Sengoku Jidai.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The school was located in Akasaka village near Sekigahara, an essential hub for transportation and military bases from ancient times. It is said that the Mino Senjuin school was founded by Sensui (\u6cc9\u6c34), the son of Yamato Koku Senjuin Shigehiro. Yamato region was one of the most famous sites for sword-forging during the late Heian-Kamakura period. Sensui moved from Yamato (today’s Nara prefecture) to Akasaka village in Mino province during the Nanbokucho period.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Senjuin School in Yamato region<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0There was a temple called Senjudo in Nara prefecture where Senju Kannon (Thousand arms) Budha statue was worshiped. And a group of swordsmiths who lived there was known as Senjuin (\u5343\u624b\u9662). They belonged to Todaji temple. Senjuin School was founded by Yukinobu, who was the son of Yoshiyuki. Yukinonobu was originally a servant for Senjuin temple, a branch of Todaiji temple during the late Heian period (1086-1107), and eventually became an Okakae Kaji for the temple.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0You can see interesting Kissaki (tip of the blade) called Shobu Zukuri (\u83d6\u84b2\u9020\u308a). There is no Yokote on this blade. Yokote is the borderline between the tip and cutting edge. We are confident you will appreciate the elegant look of this blade. Handachi style sword mounting also enhances its aesthetic beauty.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade is appraised as a Hozon Token(\u4fdd\u5b58\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:\u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, well preserved with artistic value.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Koshirae:\u00a0Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka(Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0The surface of this Fuchi Kashira is decorated with the Nanako-Ji (\u9b5a\u5b50\u5730) technique. By hitting with the Nanako-Ji Tagane (\u9b5a\u5b50\u5730\u93e8, a chisel for this technique), delicate fish egg-shaped protrusions are made on surfaces. This Fuchi Kashira is partly gold-colored, and the rest of its surface is entirely covered with this technique. Copper\u2019s black color and gold paint make an elegant color contrast to this work.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Tsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0It is challenging to judge the motif of this Menuki. We could see that gold paint was initially applied to this Menuki; however, this coloring has already faded due to aging. Also, we imagine the gold paint has probably faded because of repeated friction when holding this handle and swinging the sword many times. In the current state, which could be seen from the gaps between the Tsukamaki threads, we could see shapes that look like flowers here and there, and figures that seem to be parts of animals. It is true that it is uneasy to determine its original appearance, but it is also a trace of the long history that the former user used this part. We hope you would enjoy its texture as an antique item.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTsuba and Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0Yotsu-Mokkou-shaped Tsuba that has a Kozuka hole. Same as the Fuchi Kashira, this Tsuba\u2019s surface is also decorated with the Nanako-Ji technique. The Mimi (\u8033, edge) part of this Tsuba is colored with golden paint. Or, here is probably framed with a thin golden metal plate. This color combination is also a commonality with the Fuchi Kashira.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0About the design, you would find a bird with sharp eyes as if aiming at its prey. There is a sense of tension from the way he (or she) is concentrating with his (or her) head lowered. This large bird is probably a Taka (\u9df9, hawks\/falcon) or Washi (\u9df2, eagle). Since there are similarities between their appearances, it is challenging to judge which it is. The strength of hawks has made it a symbol of power, and both Samurai families and court nobles have appreciated this design. It is also a symbol of bravery and grace, and the valiant appearance of hawks fascinated people. During the warring period, the boy\u2019s success was to become an excellent Samurai; therefore, it has been thought that men (Samurai) and hawks had a deep connection as a symbol of advancement and authority.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0You would also find several motifs on this Tsuba, including its backside. We assume these are tools that Samurai used, such as a container for gunpowder flasks, portable heating to warm hands, etcetera.<\/span>

\nSaya<\/strong><\/span>\uff1a Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>
\n\"\"<\/p>\n

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNBTHK Hozon Certificate for the blade (No.388305)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0NBTHK<\/span><\/a>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on Apr. 12th in the 23rd year of Heisei (2011). They appraised it as Hozon Touken, the blade worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file<\/span><\/a> for your record if you request.<\/span><\/p>\n

Registration Number : <\/span>Osaka 21470<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\n\u00a0 The Board of Education in Osaka prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword . It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho(\u9283\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho(The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
