\n\u00a0This antique wooden sword stand is suitable for exhibiting a Katana sword. And you could also display a Daisho (Katana & Wakizashi) set, as seen in example pictures.

\u00a0About the design, this sword stand has a gorgeous and elegant look. Each side is decorated with a different design, so you could enjoy both sides as a front based on your taste. In the first picture, you could see a screen with cherry blossoms in full bloom. Flowers fill the screen leaving a moderate margin. Cherry blossom is one of the seasonal things of spring, and it has been loved for a long time in Japan. A theory says that the god of grain exists in cherry blossoms. Therefore, this flower pattern has been treated as the symbol of a plentiful harvest. People held a traditional custom under cherry blossom trees to pray for a bumper year in ancient times. It is said this is the origin of the cherry blossom viewing picnic today. This sword stand’s design might depict the scenery of these events.

\u00a0In the foreground of the screen, you could see the scaffolding that looks like a stage and something that is probably a large drum. The lacquered base is not only richly decorated with gold but also partially decorated with shells. This Raden (\u87ba\u923f) is a kind of decorative technique that is often used for traditional craftworks. It uses the pearl part of seashells and puts it into the engraved surface of lacquer or wood. Thanks to its iridescent luster, it gives a luxurious look to works.

\u00a0A continuous pattern of a vine-like plant is designed on the other side of this sword stand. It is a kind of Karakusa (\u5510\u8349, arabesque) design, and is a pattern in which stems and leaves of vines are twined and make curves. Since ivy has a strong vitality and grows up without interruption, people regarded this design as a symbol of prosperity and longevity. Vine is called Tsuru (\u8513) in Japanese and has another pronunciation; “Man.” There is a word \u4e07 (it is also read Man), which means ten thousand. In the Karakusa pattern, leaves and vines are connected like Obi (\u5e2f, belt). The word “\u5e2f” can also be read as “Tai.” Due to its pronunciation, the term “\u4ee3 (Tai)” is associated. From this word-association game, an idiom \u4e07\u4ee3 is associated, and it means a thousand generations. In other words, we could imagine that people used this design wishing prosperity and longevity for their clans for a long time.
