Antique Japanese Sword Wakizashi Signed by Masatsugu with NBTHK Tokubestsu<\/span> Hozon<\/span> Certificate<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade was signed by Hatakeyama Jyuryo Masatsugu (\u7560\u5c71\u5341\u826f\u6b63\u6b21) in the fourth year of the Bunsei era(1821: Late Edo Period). Masatsugu was the first maker’s name used by Hatakeyama Masamitsu (\u7560\u5c71\u6b63\u5149).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Masatsugu was born the first son of Izumo no Kami Masakiyo in Bizen province (today’s Okayama prefecture). He first moved to Harima province (Hyogo prefecture) to learn sword-forging techniques from Okamoto Yasutomo. He then moved to Edo city to become an apprentice of Suishinshi Masahide, one of the most famous swordsmiths at the end of the Edo period, to learn different craftsmanship. He also stayed in Mito (Ibaraki prefecture), Kii (Wakayama prefecture), and Settsu (Osaka prefecture) to learn from other masters. This fact indicates that he made a constant effort to refine his sword-forging skills. He mainly resided in Settsu in his career.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\" \"\"<\/p>\n

\u00a0In his career, he received Yamato Suke, an honorable title given by the emperor for his superb craftsmanship. He was also allowed to inscribe a chrysanthemum emblem, the Japanese emperor’s symbol. His sword-forging technique was so great that the emperor permitted him to use this emblem, which was honorable for any swordsmith.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0It is said that one of Masatsugu’s works was once owned by a member of Shinsengumi. This famous military unit fought for the Tokugawa Shogunate at the end of the Edo period. One record says that Oshio Heihachiro, a historical figure who tried to make a coup against the Edo government by attacking Osaka castle, owned a blade signed by Masatsugu. These records prove that Masatsugu was a renowned swordsmith at the end of the Edo period.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade is appraised as a Tokubetsu Hozon Token<\/strong>(\u7279\u5225\u4fdd\u5b58\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:\u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, especially well preserved and high quality with artistic value.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Koshirae: Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka( Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0Momiji (\u7d05\u8449, maple) leaves are designed on this Fuchi Kashira. This plant is also called the Kaede (\u6953). By making use of the colors of different metals such as gold and copper, this work is finished in bright colors. According to a theory, this plant motif represents longevity. Maple leaves change their colors from green to yellow, orange, or red. The fall foliage is one of the charms of autumn. Due to this behavior of the color, this design represents someone who knows how to get along in the world and be happy. The Momiji pattern is one of the motifs that has been appreciated for a long time. And it is said that it was favored among aristocrats since the Heian period (794-1185).<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Judging from the range that can be seen through the gaps of the Tsukamaki thread, we assume this Menuki\u2019s motif is a kind of plant. You would see elongated leaves that seem to be water plants and short leaves painted with gold-colored paint in front of them. We are not sure what plant these are. However, as the motif of Fuchi Kashira is also related to a plant, we think that the sword mountings of this sword were chosen as a commonality that it is a plant design.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\"\" \"\"<\/p>\n

Tsuba and Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0Oval-shaped Tsuba that is made from iron. The large leaves, which are similar to lotus leaves, are designed. Each leaf vein is elaborately carved, and a short vine pattern is inlaid separately from the leaf veins. This inlay is not used extensively, but it is effectively processed to enhance the decorativeness of this work. You would find a worm-eaten mark on a leaf; we would say it is a design with a playful spirit. Now, we think you realized that the motif of each sword mounting is a kind of plant. By combining the same category designs, this sword’s Koshirae was given unity for its appearance.<\/span><\/p>\n

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Certificate for the blade (No.1017897)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0NBTHK<\/span><\/a>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on Jun. 3rd in the 4th year of Reiwa (2022). They appraised it as Tokubetsu Hozon Touken, the blade especially worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file<\/span><\/a> for your record if you request.<\/span><\/p>\n

Registration Number :\u00a0<\/span> Shiga 21162<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\n\u00a0The Board of Education in Shiga prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword. It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho(\u9283\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho(The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
