\n\u00a0The principal motif of this Fuchi Kashira is the dragon. You would find gold-colored dragons are designed on both Fuchi and Kashira parts. Although some colorings have already faded due to aging, this Fuchi Kashira still retains the elegant color contrast of black and gold. On the Kashira part, the powerful figure of the dragon is depicted; this dragon rides the rough, splashing waves. On the other hand the Fuchi part, it could be seen that the dragon is surrounded by clouds. The combination of dragons and water (waves in this case) or clouds, are both popular themes and are often seen in sword mountings. It might be related to a religion that worships the dragon as a water god. Since rice cultivation has flourished in Japan, water is always an essential resource. Clouds bring blessed rain, and there is an idea that dragons dwell in clouds. Therefore, it is understandable that these motifs were cherished.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Also, the dragon was initially an imaginary creature found in ancient foreign traditions or myths. Furthermore, it is regarded as a symbol of auspicious signs. Its body is likened to nine animals: antlers are deer, the head is a camel, eyes are demons, the neck is a snake, belly is the Mizuchi (\u86df, a mythical animal in Japan that looks like a snake and has a horn and four legs), scales are fish, claws are falcons, palms are tigers, and ears are cows. It was thought that the dragon would reign at the top of all animals because of its odd-looking appearance.
