Summary<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade is attributed to Mino Senjuin (\u7f8e\u6fc3\u5343\u624b\u9662), which is one of the most famous schools during the late Nanbokucho-late Muromachi (Mid 14th-Early 16th century) period in Mino province (today’s Gifu prefecture). According to NBTHK that appraised this blade, it was approximately made during the mid-late Muromachi period (Late 15th-Early 16th century).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The school was located in Akasaka village near Sekigahara, an essential hub for transportation and military bases from ancient times. It is said that the Mino Senjuin school was founded by Sensui (\u6cc9\u6c34), the son of Yamato Koku Senjuin Shigehiro. Yamato region was one of the most famous sites for sword-forging during the late Heian-Kamakura period. Sensui moved from Yamato (today’s Nara prefecture) to Akasaka village in Mino province during the Nanbokucho period.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Senjuin School in Yamato region<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0There was a temple called Senjudo in Nara prefecture where Senju Kannon (Thousand arms) Budha statue was worshiped. And a group of swordsmiths who lived there was known as Senjuin (\u5343\u624b\u9662). They belonged to Todaji temple. Senjuin School was founded by Yukinobu, who was the son of Yoshiyuki. Yukinonobu was originally a servant for Senjuin temple, a branch of Todaiji temple during the late Heian period (1086-1107), and eventually became an Okakae Kaji for the temple.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Engraving<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0A dragon is beautifully engraved on one side. Initially, the dragon was an imaginary creature found in ancient foreign traditions or myths. Furthermore, it is regarded as a symbol of auspicious signs. Its body is likened to nine animals: antlers are deer, the head is a camel, eyes are demons, the neck is a snake, belly is the Mizuchi (\u86df, a mythical animal in Japan that looks like a snake and has a horn and four legs), scales are fish, claws are falcons, palms are tigers, and ears are cows. It was thought that the dragon would reign at the top of all animals because of its odd-looking appearance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This blade is appraised as a Hozon Token(\u4fdd\u5b58\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:\u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, well preserved with artistic value.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang on purpose to prevent red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, which is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Koshirae: Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka( Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0We think this Fuchi Kashira\u2019s motif is related to the Menuki, which we will mention later. On the Fuchi part, various types of seashells are designed. Also, seashells and ropes are engraved on the Kashira part. Several shells are colored with golden paint.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0In Japan, there is a classical pattern called the Kaidukushi (\u8c9d\u5c3d\u304f\u3057). It is a combination of different types of seashells and is often designed with a seaside scene or wave pattern. You would feel the refreshing atmosphere of summer. Bivalves, especially clams, their shells cannot be combined with any other clam\u2019s frame; therefore, it is believed that its pattern represents happy marriage.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0As mentioned above, we guess this Menuki\u2019s motif is also seashells. The figure of many seashells collected on a basket is designed. It seems it was initially decorated with golden and brown colors. Seashell is called Kai (\u8c9d) in Japanese. Because of its pronunciation, the seashell has another meaning. There is a word Yarigai (\u3084\u308a\u304c\u3044, worthwhile). As a part of this word has the same accent as Kai (\u8c9d is read as Gai in some cases), Japanese people found this meaning. Also, since seashells are hard and combined only with their pair, people thought it represented a robust defense. Due to these meanings that inspire warriors who go to the battlefields, Samurai might have loved this motif.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\" \"\"<\/p>\n

Tsuba and Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0This Tsuba has Kozuka and Kougai holes. As ornamental colorings (such as gold or silver) are not applied to this Tsuba, you could enjoy its material color directly. And it shows us its antique texture from its surface touch.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0We are unsure about the motif, but we guess its symmetrical shape seems like a key or lock. The Kagi (\u9375, key) motif has been appreciated in Japan since ancient times. Keys were often used to lock warehouse doors. That is, keys were treated as items to protect treasures. Therefore, people have treated the key design as an auspicious pattern. This motif is also included in the Takaradukushi (\u5b9d\u5c3d\u304f\u3057) pattern.<\/span><\/p>\n

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNBTHK\u00a0 Hozon Certificate for the blade (No. 3028111)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0NBTHK, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on Mar. 2nd in the 4th year of Reiwa (2022). They appraised it as Hozon Touken, the blade worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF \u5927\u548c\u56fd\u5343\u624b\u9662<\/strong>file for your record if you request.<\/span><\/p>\n

Registration Number : \u00a0Ishikawa 27918<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\n\u00a0The Board of Education in Ishikawa prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword . It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho(\u9283\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho(The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
