\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Summary<\/strong>
\n\u00a0This blade was signed by Musashi Daijo Sakon Korekazu (\u6b66\u8535\u5927\u63be\u5de6\u8fd1\u662f\u4e00). Based on the signature, we believe it was signed by the first-gen Korekazu, active during the early Edo period (1648-1673). The maker’s name Korekazu lasted seven generations. <\/span>He belonged to the Edo Ishido school, which flourished during the Edo period. He played an essential role in spreading the fame of Edo Ishido school nationwide.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The first-gen Korekazu was originally from Omi Koku(Today’s Shiga prefecture). It is said that he was a descendant of Ichimonji Sukemune(\u4e00\u6587\u5b57\u52a9\u5b97) from Bizen Koku(Today’s Okayama prefecture). He moved to Edo and founded the Edo Ishido school at the beginning of the Edo period.<\/span>
\nThis school became one of the most popular ones in Edo city, Musashi Koku. And the third-gen Ishido Korekazu became an Okakaekaji for the Edo government in 1721, exclusively forging swords for the Tokugawa clan.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\" \"\"<\/p>\n

The Foundation of Ishido School<\/strong>
\n\u00a0Ishido school was founded by Sukenaga, an offspring of Ichimonji Sukemune, who made Fukuoka Ichimonji school in Bizen province (Today’s Okayama prefecture). During 1492-1501 (Late Muromachi period), Sukenaga and his school moved from Bizen province to Omi province after being summoned by Gamou family, a powerful feudal line in that region. Sukenaga started to live in front of Ishido temple, and he changed his surname to Ishido.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0As of the early Edo period, many Ishido swordsmiths moved to other parts of Japan, looking for better opportunities. Following this trend, Ishido Korekazu moved from Omi province to Edo city (Today’s Tokyo). There are four areas: Edo, Osaka, Kishu(Wakayama prefecture), and Chikuzen(Fukuoka prefecture).<\/span><\/p>\n

Orikaeshi Mei<\/strong>
\n\u00a0This type of signature is called Orikaeshi Mei(\u6298\u8fd4\u3057\u9298). It is often the case that the signatures were cut when adjusting the size of the blades. However, sometimes, Japanese swordsmiths folded the signature part and put it to the other side to preserve the signature. That is why the signature of this Wakizashi looks upside down.<\/span><\/p>\n

Naginata Naoshi<\/strong>
\n\u00a0The authentication paper says this blade is a Naginata Naoshi, while it is categorized as a Wakizashi in the registration paper. Naginata is a traditional Japanese pole sword. According to NBTHK, this blade was originally Naginata and was shortened as a Wakizashi.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Naginata has a longer history than Katana has as a weapon. And Naginata was highly valued among Samurai families because of its history, which led them to believe it was an excellent weapon. There is a saying in Japanese sword collectors about Naginata Naoshi. It goes, “Naginata Naoshi ni Namakura Nashi,” roughly translated as Naginata Naoshi Katana, is never dull(always sharp).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade is appraised as a Tokubetsu Hozon Token<\/strong>(\u7279\u5225\u4fdd\u5b58\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:\u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, especially well preserved and high quality with artistic value.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/p>\n

Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1a Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Certificate for the blade (No.154073)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0NBTHK<\/span><\/a>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on Jul. 8th in the 21st year of Heisei (2009). They appraised it as Tokubetsu Hozon Touken, the blade especially worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file<\/span><\/a> for your record if you request.<\/span><\/p>\n

Registration Number :\u00a0<\/span> Fukuoka 28326<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\n\u00a0The Board of Education in Fukuoka prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword . It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho(\u9283\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho(The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
