Antique Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Toshihide with NBTHK<\/span> Kicho Certificate<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade was signed by Shikoshi Toshihide (\u7d2b\u8679\u5b50\u5bff\u79c0), who was active during the late Edo period (the Kansei-Bunka era:1789-1818<\/strong>) . He was an apprentice of Suishinshi Masahide, one of the most famous swordsmiths at the end of the Edo period. He served Tosa clan (Today’s Kochi prefecture) in his career.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Toshihide was born in Tosa province, and his birth name was Kariya Tadatsugu. He first signed Doshu Kariya Tadakuni. In the 12th year of the Kansei era (1800), he was ordered to go to Edo city (Today’s Tokyo) and become an apprentice of Suishinshi Masahide to master excellent craftsmanship.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0He was scheduled to stay there for a shorter period. However, he was too focused on improving his sword-forging techniques, and he overstayed in Edo until he got permission from his master in the seond year of the Bunka era (1804). And he eventually came back to Tosa domain, but the clan first expelled him because of the violation. However, he was forgiven and came back to the domain later. Since then, he was highly appreciated by Samurai who lived there.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Among other swordsmiths in Tosa domain, active during the late Edo period, Toshihide was one of the most well-known makers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Koshirae:\u00a0Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka(Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0The theme of this Fuchi Kashira is landscape. A hedge and flowers are designed on the Fuchi part, and a pine tree is depicted on the Kashira part in the abstracted design. The moon is seen in the sky, so we know that it expresses a moonlit night. Each motif is inlaid with golden metal (probably brass or gold), and this coloring adds decorativeness to this work.<\/span>

\nTsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Although its original shape is not precise now due to aging, we think this Menuki\u2019s motif is the Kara-Jishi (\u5510\u7345\u5b50). Two or three Kara-Jishis are designed together in this work. This wear shows us its long history and proves that this handle was often grasped by its owner. This animal is a classical subject and favored designing for various items since a long time ago. The Shishi (\u7345\u5b50) means a lion in Japanese, and the Kara-Jishi is a lion brought from the Continent to Japan in the Toh period (\u5510, Tang dynasty, 618-907). The Kara-Jishi typically has curly hair for its head, neck, body, and the tail. In Buddhism, the Kara-Jishi is regarded as a symbol of wisdom, and the Monju Bosatu (\u6587\u6b8a\u83e9\u85a9, Manjushri Bodhisattva) rides lions. According to a theory, the Kara-Jishi originates from the Komainu (\u72db\u72ac, stone guardian dogs that exorcize evil spirits).<\/span>

\nTsuba and Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0This Tsuba has chrysanthemum shape. If you focus on each petal part, you will find swirl patterns are inlaid with brass. A long time ago, the chrysanthemum was used as a medicine for obtaining a long life, and it was brought to Japan from the continent with this thought in the Nara period (648-781). Chrysanthemum symbolizes fall, and people have greatly appreciated it since ancient times. As its petals form radially, the chrysanthemum has been likened to the sun. That is why this flower pattern is treated as the symbol of perpetual youth and longevity or good health.<\/span>

Saya<\/strong><\/span>\uff1a Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNBTHK Kicho Certificate for the blade<\/strong><\/span> (No.190487 ) and Koshirae (No. 725)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0NBTHK<\/a><\/span><\/span>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on Jun. 7th in the 45th year of Showa (1970). They appraised it as Kicho Touken, an old form the certificate. Its sword mounting was also appraised Kicho Tosogu as well in the same day. The purchaser will receive these original certificates as well. Registration Number : <\/span>\u00a0Kagawa 14637<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Board of Education in Kagawa prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword . It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho(\u9283\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho(The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
