\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade was signed by Bishu Osafune Tsuneie (\u5099\u5dde\u9577\u8239\u7d4c\u5bb6) in the third year of the Eisho era (<\/span>1506:<\/span><\/strong> Late Muromachi period). The maker\u2019s name Tsuneie lasted five generations during the late Kamakura-late Muromachi period (1288-1521). And, based on the year this blade was made, we believe the 5th-gen Tsuneie, who was active during 1504-1521, created it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Bishu\uff08\u5099\u5dde\uff09is a larger area in today\u2019s Okayama\uff06Hiroshima prefecture. Bishu consists of Bizen(\u5099\u524d), Bitchu\uff08\u5099\u4e2d\uff09, and Bingo (\u5099\u5f8c). Osafune is the school\u2019s name located in Bizen province. It is said the first-gen Tsuneie was the son of Hatakeda Moriie during the late Kamakura period.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\" \"\"<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0Those who forged swords in the Bizen province (Okayama prefecture) at the end of the Muromachi Period(1492-1569 A.D) are called Matsu Bizen(Matsu means the end in Japanese). The swordsmiths in Bizen produced many swords during the Muromachi period as it was in the middle of the Sengoku period(Warring state period). The demand for weapons increased among strong feudal lords. It would be nice to have a piece forged in the warring state period when there was so much rivalry between warlords.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0BIZEN is located near the Chugoku Mountains, where iron sands, one of the essential materials for making Japanese swords, were abundant. Furthermore, BIZEN swordsmiths had close access to Yoshi River, where they could find water and charcoal. This geological location contributed to the swordsmiths forging high-quality refined blades. We presume BIZEN was quite active in sword-forging from ancient times. It is said that BIZEN DEN, a famous Japanese sword-forging technique, was created by groups of swordsmiths in Bizen after the late Heian era(Late 12th century ).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 This blade is appraised as a Hozon Token(\u4fdd\u5b58\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:\u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, well preserved with artistic value.<\/span><\/p>\n

Koshirae:\u00a0Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka(Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0Fuchi Kashira, Menuki, and Tsuba, all these sword mountings of this Katana, are decorated with a common motif: chrysanthemum. There are various chrysanthemums, and each sword mounting has a different flower style. This Fuchi Kashira is made of silvery metal, and each petal is elongated and makes a large flower bloom. Flowers are folded without gaps, and the presence of flowers is pushed out to the front. It is such a decorative work.<\/span>
\n\"\" \"\"
\nTsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Unlike the Fuchi Kashira, this Menuki\u2019s motif is a combination of small chrysanthemums. Flowers are colored with golden paint, and this coloring still remains relatively in good condition. A long time ago, the chrysanthemum was used as a medicine for obtaining a long life in the continent, and it was brought to Japan with this thought in the Nara period (648-781). Chrysanthemum symbolizes fall, and people have greatly appreciated it since ancient times. As its petals form radially, the chrysanthemum has been likened to the sun. That is why this flower pattern is treated as the symbol of perpetual youth and longevity or good health.<\/span>
\n\"\"\u00a0 \u00a0 \"\"<\/p>\n

Tsuba and Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Same as the Fuchi Kashira, this Tsuba\u2019s chrysanthemums are arranged without gaps. There is a contrast between the metal color and the color of the calyx and the center of flowers. This black and gold combination makes this work’s elegant and gorgeous appearance.<\/p>\n

Here we would like to touch upon the history of chrysanthemum design. From the Kamakura (1185-1333) period to the Warring States period (1467-1615), the chrysanthemum crest was given as a reward from the then Emperor to the warlords who made significant contributions. For example, Ashikaga Takauji (1305-1358), who became the first Shogun of the Muromachi Shogunate, cooperated with Emperor Go-Daigo (\u5f8c\u918d\u9190\u5929\u7687, 1288-1339) to dissolve the Kamakura Shogunate. And Takauji was given a chrysanthemum crest.<\/p>\n

In addition, Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537-1598) was also given a chrysanthemum crest by Emperor Goyouzei. A theory says Hideyoshi was delighted and used this motif for furniture. At that time, the Emperor was regarded as God. Therefore, it was an irreplaceable honor for Samurais to receive the family crest from the Emperor. \u00a0\u00a0NBTHK<\/a><\/span><\/span>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on Aug. 27th in the 3rd year of Reiwa (2021). They appraised it as Hozon Touken, the blade worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive these original certificates as well. Registration Number : Tokyo 278355<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Board of Education in Tokyo prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword . It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho(\u9283\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho(The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
