\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade was signed by Oku Yamato no Kami Taira Ason Motohira (\u5965\u5927\u548c\u5b88\u5e73\u671d\u81e3\u5143\u5e73) according to NBTHK, while \u201dAson Motohira\u201d part was cut due to Suriage (size adjustment) in the past. The back of the tang says the 8th year of the Kansei era, which means the blade was forged in 1796 (the late Edo period). Motohira is one of the most renowned swordsmiths in Satsuma domain (Today\u2019s Kagoshima prefecture) during the late Edo period.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0He was born in October, the first year of the Enkyo era (1744), as the first son of Oku Motonao in Satsuma domain. His birth name was Oku Kouzaemon. It was often the case with many swordsmiths that they used different makers\u2019 names from their real names.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0In his early career, he learned sword-forging techniques from his father, and when he was 38 years old, he became a Hanko (\u85e9\u5de5), who exclusively forged swords for a specific clan. <\/span>
\nThis fact suggests that his craftsmanship was widely recognized in the domain. Furthermore, he received Yamato no Kami in the first year of the Kansei era (1789). Kami is an honorable official title given by the emperor to highly skilled swordsmiths. It is said that he trained many swordsmiths, including Bizen Sukehira. Many of his apprentices traveled to Satsuma domain from a very long distance. We assume his sword-forging techniques were very refined and appreciated among Japanese swordsmiths.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Considering when he was born, this blade was forged in his early 50s. He lived a long life, and he died at the age of 84 in 1826. He kept forging blades until he was 83 years old. He must have had full of vitality to make high-quality blades throughout his career.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Satsuma province had a high ratio of Samurai population compared to other parts of Japan. And they are famous for their military power ruled by Shimazu clan. We assume a swordsmith needed to be skilled to stay active and popular in this demanding place. Motohira was one of them.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 This blade is appraised as a Hozon Token(\u4fdd\u5b58\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:\u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, well preserved with artistic value.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Koshirae:\u00a0Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka(Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Waves are designed for this Fuchi Kashira. The shapes of the layered waves are carefully carved one by one. As waves\u2019 movements continue endlessly, the wave pattern represents eternity, immortality, longevity, birth, etcetera. Also, since tides repeatedly change the shape and terrain of rocks, some people hoped for a strong will by using this motif. People used this pattern wishing for an indomitable spirit to rechallenge time and time without giving up. Thanks to its dynamic design, this motif has been appreciated, especially for men\u2019s Kimono (traditional Japanese costume).<\/p>\n

\nTsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0You would find a kind of fish is the motif of this Menuki. Due to its appearance, we think this is the Koi (\u9bc9, domestic carp). According to an ancient foreign story, lots of fish tried to climb the waterfall called Ryumon (\u7adc\u9580, dragon gate) in the rapid stream of the Yellow River. As a result, only Koi climbed up and became a dragon and ran through the sky. This is the reason why “Koi-no Taki Nobori” (\u9bc9\u306e\u6edd\u6607\u308a, domestic carp climbing waterfall) became a symbol of suc<\/span>cess in life. The Ryumon legend is associated with this story. By living confidently and making efforts, people hoped for their children to grow up to become magnificent people. Samurai families then might have used this fish motif wishing their sons to be promoted to high-ranked Samurais.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Now, when you see the whole Tsuka part, you will notice that Menuki’s design is linked to the Fuchi Kashira’s design: it is a combination of water-related motifs. Based on the legend, it might have tried to express the appearance of a Koi that has risen against the rough seas.<\/span>

\nTsuba and Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0 This Tsuba has a simple look. Its outline draws a gentle curve, making us feel a soft impression. Although there are minor damages due to aging, it is relatively in good condition.<\/span>

\nSaya<\/strong><\/span>\uff1a Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

This Saya is coated with stingray skin.

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNBTHK Hozon Certificate for the blade (No. 361821)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0NBTHK<\/a><\/span><\/span>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on Jun 7th in the 14th year of Heisei (2002). They appraised it as Hozon Touken, the blade worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive these original certificates as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file<\/span><\/a><\/span> for your record if you request.<\/span><\/p>\n

Registration Number : Osaka 118182<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Board of Education in Osaka prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword . It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho(\u9283\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho(The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
