\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

This blade was signed by Kawachi no Kami Fujiwara Kunisuke (\u6cb3\u5185\u5b88\u85e4\u539f\u56fd\u52a9). Kunisuke was one of the most well-known swordsmiths in Osaka during the early Edo period (Kanbun-Shoho era: 1624-1648<\/strong>). There were three generations of Kunisuke in total. NBTHK appraised this blade as a work of the first-gen. The maker’s name Kunisuke lasted three generations and the second-gen was also a renowned swordsmith.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The first-gen Kunisuke was born in Ise province(today\u2019s Mie province) and served Seki Kazumasa, the head of Kameyama castle. However, after the Seki clan was destroyed, he moved to Kyoto. He became an apprentice of Horikawa Kunihiro, one of the most famous swordsmiths during the early Edo period. After Kunihiro deceased, Kunisuke learned the sword-forging technique from Echigo no Kami Kunitomo. Eventually, he moved to Osaka with Izumi no Kami Kunisada to become an independent sword maker in the seventh year of Kaenei(1630). It is said that he played an essential role in making Osaka Shinto movement. the superb craftsmanship of the first-gen was passed down to the next two generations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Osaka Shinto<\/strong>
\n\u00a0The blades forged by Kunisuke are categorized as Osaka Shinto. Shinto is Japanese Sword terminology that refers to the swords forged during 1596-1781. The blades made in the Osaka area during this period are called Osaka Shinto. There are many famous swordsmiths in this Osaka Shinto era. After Hideyoshi Toyotomi built Osaka castle, Osaka city flourished as a castle town and became the business center. Many swordsmiths moved to Osaka to look for better opportunities. They not only forged swords for those Samurai who lived in Osaka but also for feudal lords nationwide. Ikanshi Tadatsuna(Awataguchi Omi no Kami Tadatsuna), Inoue Shinkai, and Tsuda Sukehiro are the most famous among many swordsmiths.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0One of the most notable characteristics of Osaka Shinto is its beauty in Jigane. Jigane is a visible steel surface pattern created by folding and hammering during the forging process), which made it possible by the location of Osaka. Osaka had close access to the Tamahagane(special carbon steel to make Japanese swords) production sites. The swordsmiths residing in Osaka were able to get high-quality carbon steel from these sites.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade is appraised as a Hozon Token(\u4fdd\u5b58\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:\u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, well preserved with artistic value.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Koshirae:\u00a0Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka(Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0We think this Fuchi Kashira depicts a state of a feast. People are dressed in gorgeous clothes, chatting or enjoying a dance. With coloring using gold, silver, and copper, this Fuchi Kashira has a brilliant look. Even the plants in the background are carefully carved and designed to fill this small space without any gaps. You would find an engraved inscription at the side of the Fuchi part. It is its maker’s signature. <\/span><\/p>\n

\nTsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This Menuki’s motif is a kind of plant. Tiny flowers are blooming on the twigs. Golden paint is applied to these petals; the color contrast with this gold and black makes a luxurious look. We are unsure of the model of this plant; it is probably a popular flower for Japanese people, such as the Japanese apricot blossom. It has been cherished as an auspicious motif that represents the arrival of spring because it comes out in the cold season. Also, some people thought it symbolized the power of perseverance and vitality.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\" \"\"<\/p>\n

Tsuba and Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0Yotsu-Mokkou-shaped Tsuba that has a Kozuka hole. There is an engraved motif on the opposite side of the Kozuka hole. Its model could be thought of in several possibilities. We guess it might be a caterpillar. The caterpillar slowly but steadily moves forward to the destination. Its solidity and tireless efforts may have positively affected Samurais\u2019 feelings. Also, one of the popular motifs among Samurais was the butterfly design. However, the butterfly was initially a larva. From these things, it is understandable that the caterpillar motif is seen in sword mountings.<\/span><\/p>\n

Saya<\/strong><\/span>\uff1a Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Certificate for the blade (No.1005175)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0NBTHK<\/span><\/a>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on March 23rd in the 28th year of Heisei (2016). They appraised it as Tokubetsu Hozon Touken, the blade especially worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file<\/span><\/a> for your record if you request.<\/span><\/p>\n

Registration Number :\u00a0<\/span> Tokyo 314653<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\n\u00a0The Board of Education in Tokyo prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword . It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho(\u9283\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho(The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
