\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade is attributed to Sasshu Jyu Kiyoyasu (\u85a9\u5dde\u4f4f\u6e05\u4fdd) during the Bunka era (1804-1818<\/strong>), according to NTHK that appraised this blade. Sasshu is another name for Satsuma province (Today\u2019s Kagoshima prefecture).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Satsuma province had a high ratio of Samurai population compared to other parts of Japan. And they are famous for their military power ruled by Shimazu clan. We assume swordsmiths residing there needed to be very skilled to stay active and popular in this demanding place.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The authentication paper says that the blade was shortened (Suriage) in the past. And this type of tempering line (Hamon) is called Chusuguha (mid straight tempering line). And its steel surface is Itame Hada, a wood grain type pattern in the skin steel of the blade.<\/span><\/p>\n

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/p>\n

Koshirae:\u00a0Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka( Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0The dragon is engraved on the Fuchi Kashira. Although it does not have gold or silver coloring, this Fuchi Kashira looks gorgeous thanks to the dynamic figure of dragons. Initially, the dragon is an imaginary creature found in ancient traditions or myths. Furthermore, it is regarded as a symbolic beast of auspicious signs. Its body is likened to nine animals: antlers are deer, the head is a camel, eyes are demons, the neck is a snake, belly is the Mizuchi (\u86df, mythical animal in Japan which looks like a snake and have a horn and four legs), scales are fish, claws are falcons, palms are tigers, and ears are cows. It was thought that the dragon would reign at the top of all animals because of its odd-looking appearance.<\/span>

\nTsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0A kind of bird is the motif of this Menuki. Golden coloring was applied to it. This bird might be the Houou (\u9cf3\u51f0, Fenghuang) or the Suzaku (\u6731\u96c0). Both birds are sacred fantasy beasts. The Houou is a member of the Shirei (\u56db\u970a, four fantasy animals) with Kirin (\u9e92\u9e9f, Qilin), Kame (\u4e80, Turtle), and Ryu (\u9f8d, dragon). And the Houou looks like a combination of chicken and peacock. The Houou was considered an auspicious sign in the ancient continent, and it was believed that the Houou would show up when the brilliant emperor appeared. People appreciate its graceful shape in Japan. The Suzaku is a guardian god of the south. This bird belongs to the Shijin (\u56db\u795e, four gods who control four directions). The Seiryu (\u9752\u9f8d, a type of dragon) also belongs to the Shijin; therefore, we think that the combination of dragon and the Houou or the Suzaku are both possible. As the Fuchi Kashira and Tsuba both have the dragon motif, this Menuki’s motif might have been inspired by these sacred beasts’ combination.<\/span>

\nTsuba and Habaki<\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0NTHK<\/span><\/a>, also known as NPO Nihon Touken Hozon Kai, is the oldest organization for sword authentication of Japanese swords in modern times. It was established in 1910 during the post-Samurai era. They authenticated the blade on March 13rd, the 4th year of Reiwa (2022). The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. Registration Number : <\/span>Mie 22536<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Board of Education in Mie prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword . It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho(\u9283\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho(The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
