\u3010Description\u3011
\n\u00a0This blade is attributed to Tegai Kanekiyo (\u624b\u63bb\u5305\u6e05) between the end of the Nanbokucho era and the O-Ei period (1392-1428), according to NBTHK’s appraisal. The swordsmith name Kanekiyo lasted a few generations in Yamato province (today’s Nara prefecture).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The first-gen Kanenaga is known as the founder of Tegai school. Considering the age mentioned in the authentication paper, we believe NBTHK attributed it to a work of the late-gen Kanekiyo based on its characteristics. The school was prosperous during the late Kamakura-mid Muromachi period (1288-1460). It is said that Tegai school belonged to Todaiji temple, and it was located in front of the gate called Tengai Gate (\u8f3e\u78d1\u9580). The school name Tegai originally came from the sound of Tengai Gate.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\" \"\"<\/p>\n

\u00a0There were five prestigious schools, including Tegai school, during the Kamakura-Nanbokucho period in Yamato province. They are called Yamato Goha(\u5927\u548c\u4e94\u6d3e); Senjyuin(\u5343\u624b\u9662), Shikkake (\u5c3b\u61f8), Taima(\u5f53\u9ebb), Hosho(\u4fdd\u660c) and Tegai(\u624b\u63bb) school. They served politically powerful monks and temples in Nara, such as Todaiji temples. They were initially forging swords for military monks who became powerful due to the government’s policy back then.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Monks needed many weapons as there were many political rivalries between influential temples. They required strong weapons like swords to protect themselves. During this time, Tegai school or other Yamato sword schools met the requests from monks. They also forged blades for Samurai during their heyday. It is often the case that those who belonged to Yamato Goha didn’t inscribe their signatures.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Tegai school belonged to YAMATO DEN, which has the longest history among GOKADEN, five traditions of Japanese sword forging techniques. The blades forged by swordsmiths residing in the Yamato region are generally called Yamato Mono.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The swords forged in the Yamato regions are famous for their beautiful Jigane, steel surface, and straight tempering line(Suguha). This blade has a beautiful Jigane with a Suguha tempering line, which shows an outstanding characteristic of the Yamato sword.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade is appraised as a Tokubetsu Hozon Token<\/strong>(\u7279\u5225\u4fdd\u5b58\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:\u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, especially well preserved and high quality with artistic value.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Koshirae:\u00a0Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka(Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0Various motifs are designed for this Fuchi Kashira. We think these are family crests and auspicious items. For example, you would find a bird pattern that a bird’s figure with its wings spread. It might be a Tsuru (\u9db4, crane), and this design exists as a family crest. The Tsuru pattern itself has been treated as an auspicious design that represents longevity.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0You would also find other motifs. The Chouji (\u4e01\u5b50, precious medicine, fragrance, dye) is a plant that represents happy marriage, good health, and longevity. Also, a small golden sac is probably a Kinnou (\u91d1\u56a2); it is a bag to store treasures. A theory says it has been regarded as a money charm. These are motifs in the Takaradukushi (\u5b9d\u5c3d\u304f\u3057) pattern.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0We need to image the entire shape of this Menuki by seeing from the gaps of the Tsukamaki thread. It might be a kind of flowers, such as chrysanthemum or dandelion. Although golden coloring has already faded due to aging partly, it seems some parts were initially decorated with elegant gold color.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTsuba and Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0Oval-shaped Tsuba that has Kozuka and Kougai holes. This Tsuba has a plain design. You could enjoy the beauty of the black color and texture of its material directly. Also, as this Tsuba has a simple look, it matches well with other sword mountings when inserted into the handle. You would see how it looks in the pictures of the Koshirae.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nSaya<\/strong><\/span>\uff1a Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNBTHK TOKUBETSU Hozon Certificate for the blade (No. 1015206)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0NBTHK<\/a><\/span><\/span>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on Feb 25th in the 3rd year of Reiwa (2021). They appraised it as Tokubetsu Hozon Touken, the blade especially worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file<\/span><\/a><\/span> for your record if you request.<\/span><\/p>\n

Registration Number : Nigata 072712<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Board of Education in Nigata prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword . It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho(\u9283\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho(The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
