Antique Japanese Sword Wakizashi Attributed to Kanemichi with NBTHK Tokubetsu Kicho Certificate<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade is attributed to Kanemichi (\u517c\u9053), a swordsmith in Mino province from the late Muromachi period, according to NBTHK that appraised the blade. We made a phone call to confirm this information.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0There were a few swordsmiths who used Kanemichi as their maker\u2019s names at the end of the Muromachi period. <\/span>
\nThe most famous one is Kanemichi, who founded Mishina school in Kyoto.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0It is said that Kanemichi was the 9th grandson of Shizusaburo Kaneuji, one of the most famous swordsmiths in the Naboucho era in Mino province (today\u2019s Gifu prefecture).<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\" \"\"<\/p>\n

\u00a0Kanemichi was most active in sword-forging during 1558-1575 (Eiroku-Tensho era). He was originally resided near Hachiman castle in Gujyo city, Gifu prefecture, forging swords. Then, he served Takeda Shingen, a famous feudal lord in the Sengoku era (Warring state period).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Later in his career, he moved to Kyoto by bringing his four sons and founded his school in Kyoto in the second year of the Bunroku era (1593). Four sons were Iga no Kami Kinmichi(\u4f0a\u8cc0\u5b88\u91d1\u9053)\u3001Izumi no Kami Rai Kinmichi(\u548c\u6cc9\u5b88\u6765\u91d1\u9053), Tanba no Kami Yoshimichi(\u4e39\u6ce2\u5b88\u5409\u9053) and Echu no kami Masatoshi(\u8d8a\u4e2d\u5b88\u6b63\u4fca). His sons were known as Kyoto Gokaji(\u4eac\u90fd\u4e94\u935b\u51b6), prestigious swordsmiths forging in Kyoto in the early Edo period.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0You can see the engraving on the tang of the blade. We believe this blade used to be longer, and the engraving must have been a part of the blade. Kurikara Ken was a motif of this engraving. Kurikara-Ken (\u5036\u5229\u4f3d\u7f85\u5263) is the sword that Fudo Myo-O (\u4e0d\u52d5\u660e\u738b, acalan\u0101tha) holds with his right hand(you can see it on the tang part). Fudo Myo-O is one of the objects of worship in Buddhism. According to a theory, it is the incarnation of Dainichi Nyorai (\u5927\u65e5\u5982\u6765, Mah\u0101vairocana, the principal image of esoteric Buddhism). Kurikara-ken was named due to its appearance that Kurikara Ryu-O (\u5036\u5229\u4f3d\u7f85\u9f8d\u738b, dragon) is winding around the sword. It is believed Kurikara-Ken could cut off worldly desires: Sandoku (\u4e09\u6bd2). Sandoku is the three fundamental earthly desires; Ton (\u8caa, greed), Jin (\u778b, anger, grudge), Chi (\u7661, delusion, complaint).<\/span><\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang on purpose to prevent red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, which is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/p>\n

Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1a Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNBTHK Tokubetsu Kicho Certificate for blade<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0NBTHK<\/span><\/a>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on March 25th in the 48th year of Showa era(1973). They appraised it as Tokubetsu Kicho Token, an old form of certificate. Registration Number : \u00a0Toyama 13325<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>The Board of education in Toyama prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword . It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho(\u9283\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho(The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
