Antique Japanese Sword Tanto Attributed to Kanenori with NTHK Kanteisho<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Certificate<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade is attributed to Noshu Seki Kanenori(\u6fc3\u5dde\u95a2 \u517c\u5247) from the Eiroku era(1558-1570<\/strong>: late Muromachi period) according to NTHK that authenticated this blade. Kanenori is categorized as Sueseki, which refers to the sword makers from Mino province at the end of the Muromachi Period (Late 16th Century).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The MINO swordsmith’s style, also known as MINO-DEN, basically has the TOGARI(Pointed shapes protruding from the Hamon )in a classic straight line and random tempe<\/span>r line with some white Utsuri. MINO-DEN had its origin from YAMATO-DEN in the late KAMAKURA period(1280-1330). It flourished in the MUROMACHI period(1333-1573) and continued until the EDO period(1603-1868).<\/p>\n

\"\" \"\"<\/p>\n

\u00a0MINO-DEN especially prospered during Sengoku Jidai(Warring State period) due to the high demand for weapons. And the location of Mino province beat others. Akechi Mitsuhide controlled Mino province, and Nobunaga Oda ruled Owari province, and Tokugawa Ieyasu was the lord of Suruga (Neighboring areas). There was high demand from those powerful feudal lords and their retainers. Furthermore, so many wars occurred be<\/span>tween the Kanto region and the Kyoto area, and Mino is located in the middle, making feudal lords feel convenient to order swords from MINO-DEN. The blades forged in MINO provinces also had the reputation of its practical design and sharpness. Many feudal lords demanded swords forged in the Mino province. It would be nice to own the blade made during this warring state period.<\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Koshirae:\u00a0Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka( Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The scabbard and handle are painted with the same color lacquer. It has a bright red color, and the Fuchi Kashira part is colored with black lacquer. When the blade part is stored in the scabbard, it even looks like an ornamental object, not a Japanese sword.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0You see that golden plants are designed with elegant gold paintings. This plant is probably the Hyoutan (\u74e2\u7baa, gourd) from the shape of the fruit part. Since ancient times, Japanese people have appreciated this plant design as an auspicious motif. As mentioned above, the first letter of its Japanese name is pronounced as \u201cHyou.\u201d Therefore, three gourds were associated with the San-Byoushi (\u4e09\u62cd\u5b50, triple time). And people compared six gourds to the Mubyou Sokusai (\u7121\u75c5\u606f\u707d, be in perfect health). It is because the word \u201c\u75c5 (Byou)\u201d has the same pronunciation as \u201c\u74e2 (it also can be read Byou).\u201d Also, the gourd pattern represents success in business and the prosperity of descendants as this plant produces lots of fruits. These meanings tell you how Japanese people love this design based on its acting superstitiously for good luck.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Now let\u2019s touch on an example of the relationship betwee<\/span>n the gourd motif and the Samurai culture. Toyotomi Hideyoshi (\u8c4a\u81e3 \u79c0\u5409, 1537-1598) is one of the most famous Samurais during the Warring States period (1467-1615). According to a theory, his Umajirushi (\u99ac\u5370, massive flag raised near the general Samurai on the battlefield) was the Senari-Byoutan (\u5343\u6210\u74e2\u7baa). He was given the gourd motif for his Umajirushi from Oda Nobunaga (\u7e54\u7530 \u4fe1\u9577, 1534-1582). It is said he added gourds every time he won the battles. This Koshirae\u2019s maker might have decided to incorporate the gourd pattern into this Koshirae because of his (or its customer\u2019s) desire to pay tribute to Hideyoshi\u2019s career advancement. Tsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span>

\nTsuba and Habaki<\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNTHK-NPO Kanteisho Certificate for the blade<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0NTHK<\/span><\/a>, also known as NPO Nihon Touken Hozon Kai, is the oldest organization for sword authentication of Japanese swords in modern times. It was established in 1910 during the post-Samurai era. They authenticated the blade on Nov 14th, the 3rd year of Reiwa (2021). The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. Registration Number :<\/span><\/strong><\/span> Nigata 25376<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Board of Education in Nigata prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword . It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho(\u9283\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho(The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
