Summary<\/strong><\/span>
\n\u00a0According to NBTHK that authenticated this blade, it was signed by Kiyomitsu (\u6e05\u5149)in the late Muromachi period(approx. 450-550 years old). There were the swordsmiths named Kiyomitsu residing in Mino (Gifu prefecture), Bizen (Okayama prefecture), Satsuma (Kagoshima prefecture), Kaga (Ishikawa prefecture), and Suo (Yamaguchi prefecture) domain back then. And, NBTHK doesn\u2019t specify which Kiyomitsu forged this blade. Nevertheless, you can see the excellent sword-forging technique from the late Muromachi period.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0When this blade was forged, Japan was a warring state period called Sengoku Jidai, where there were so many rivalries and wars between regional feudal lords to expand their land or gain political control. During that time, this blade was created.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is KOTO?\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>
\n\u00a0The blades made between the Late Heian Period towards the end of the Warring State Period (930-1595 A.D.) are called KOTO (\u53e4\u5200: Old-Sword) in Japanese. Those swords were likely to be used in the real lives of Samurai, so their designs had to fit the way they used the sword. It is said that the KO-TO blades contain gold, silver, and other metals in the carbon steel, making the surface pattern of Koto intricate and beautiful.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is TANTO?\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>
\n\u00a0Japanese swords under the blade length of 30cm (11.6 inches) are generally categorized as a TANTO, and sometimes TSUBA(\u9354; Hand-Guard) is not attached to the TANTO. That is the case with this blade, and this kind of Koshirae is Aikuchi Koshirae.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Tanto was initially used as a supplemental weapon for Samurai on horseback, who used a pole weapon or long sword in the Kamaura-Muromachi period. Samurai aimed at an unprotected area of his enemy\u2019s armor with Tanto while fighting with close distance.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade is appraised as a Hozon Token(\u4fdd\u5b58\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:\u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, well preserved with artistic value.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/p>\n

Koshirae:\u00a0Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka(Handle), Kozuka.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

This Fuchi Kashira has a simple look; however, the golden coloring gives a decorativeness for it. On the Fuchi part, you would find that a geometric pattern is designed with gold lines. We think it is categorized as the Saya Gata (\u7d17\u7dbe\u5f62) pattern. It is a type of continuous design, and many Samurais loved it. According to a theory, this motif was brought to Japan in the Momoyama period (1568-1600) from a foreign country. The Saya Gata pattern has a graceful appearance and represents the longevity and prosperity of the family.<\/p>\n

\nTsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This Menuki\u2019s motif is a kind of flower. By seeing its shape from the gaps of the Tsukamaki thread, it is probably the Ume (\u6885, Japanese apricot blossom). Gold paint is applied to some parts and makes an ornamental appearance. This flower motif is often seen in sword mountings. It shows lots of Samurais favored its design. Japanese apricot blossoms begin to bloom in winter that snow still covers its tree. Therefore, people thought this flower tells the arrival of spring. Same as cherry blossom, it has been appreciated for a long time in Japan. People enjoy its adorable petal shape and scent, gracefully branched tree, and compose many poems. It symbolizes the power of perseverance and vitality as it comes out in the cold season.<\/span><\/p>\n

Habaki<\/span>\uff1aHabaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNBTHK Hozon Certificate for the blade (No. 3025925 )<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0NBTHK<\/span><\/a>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on May 24rd in the 3rd year of Reiwa (2021). They appraised it as Hozon Touken, the blade worth preserving for Japanese society. Registration Number : <\/span>\u00a0Gifu 8246<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\nThe Board of Education in Gifu prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword . It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho(\u9283\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho(The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
