\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade was signed by Omi no Daijyo Fujiwara Tadahiro(\u8fd1\u6c5f\u5927\u63be\u85e4\u539f\u5fe0\u5e83) , who is the first son of the first-gen Tadayoshi according to NBTHK Hozon certificate. While the signature of Tadahiro part was cut due to Suriage (size adjustment) in the past, NBTHK appraised it as a work of Tadahiro based on the characteristic of the blade. It is said that he was active in sword-forging during 1624-1688<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Tadayoshi(Father) is one of the most famous swordsmiths in the early Edo period and made Hizeon province(today\u2019s Fukuoka prefecture) a prominent sword-forging place back then. Tadahiro learned sword-forging techniques under his father\u2019s supervision until Tadayoshi died in 1632 (9th year of the Kan-Ei era).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Tadahiro took over the school his father ran when he was only 19 years old, and he started to make a sword in the same year. This fact indicates that he was excellent at making swords, and the apprentices of his father(Tadayoshi) supported him to run the school. Tadahiro received the title of Omi Daijyo in 1641 (the sixth year of the Genroku era). He kept forging swords for almost 60 years for the Nabeshima clan, strong feudal lords.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Tadahiro died at the age of 81 in 1693 and left a large number of excellent swords before his decease.He had many famous apprentices, such as the third-gen Mutsu Daijyo Tadayoshi, Harima Daijyo Tadakuni, and Kawachi Daijyo Masahiro.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Fujiwara Tadahiro and other swordsmiths in the Hizen province worked under the auspices of Nabeshima clan. The swordsmiths in Hizen province were able to produce beautiful Jigane-patterned blades, also known as Hizen To, using and mixing carbon steel made in Netherland.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Most of Tadahiro\u2019s work has Hamon types of Suguha and Chojimidare. These blades have Suguha Hamon, and you can see beautiful Jigane, which is famous for blades made in Hizen province. Swords forged by Tadahiro are also famous among Japanese sword collectors because of his exquisite craftsmanship and history.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade is appraised as a Hozon Token(\u4fdd\u5b58\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:\u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, well preserved with artistic value.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Koshirae:\u00a0Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka( Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0Dragons are designed for this Fuchi Kashira. It looks some parts were initially colored with golden paint. Originally, the dragon is an imaginary creature found in ancient Chinese traditions or myths. Furthermore, it is regarded as a symbolic beast of auspicious signs. Its body is likened to nine animals: antlers are deer, the head is a camel, eyes are demons, the neck is a snake, belly is the Mizuchi (\u86df, mythical animal in Japan which looks like a snake and have a horn and four legs), scales are fish, claws are falcons, palms are tigers, and ears are cows. It was thought that the dragon would reign at the top of all animals because of its odd-looking appearance.<\/span>

\nTsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Same as the Fuchi Kashira, this Menuki’s motif is also the dragon. This beast design is often found in sword mountings. We imagine that many Samurais appreciated the dragon’s dynamic and dignified figure. Also, this beast was related to traditional faith in Japan. There is a belief that worships dragon as a water god. Since rice cultivation flourished in this country, water is always an essential resource. Therefore, the dragon motif has been familiar to Japanese people since long ago.\u00a0<\/span>

\n<\/b>Tsuba and Habaki<\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0A geometric pattern decorates this Tsuba. We would categorize it as a kind of the Raimon (\u96f7\u6587) pattern. This design was brought to Japan from the Continent. The lightning is the original of this design. It is often used in combination of two or more, as you see in this work.

\u00a0NBTHK<\/span><\/a>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on Feb 19th in the second year of Reiwa (2020). They appraised it as Hozon Touken, the blade worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file<\/span><\/a> for your record if you request.<\/span><\/p>\n

Registration Number : <\/span>Shiga 21014<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\n\u00a0 The Board of Education in Shiga prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword . It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho(\u9283\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho(The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
