\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

This blade was forged by Ishimi no Kami Fujiwara Masanao(\u77f3\u898b\u5b88\u85e4\u539f\u6b63\u76f4) in Bizen province(Okayama prefecture) during the Kan-Ei era(1624-1644<\/strong>: the early Edo period).
\nHe was originally from Kai Mihara in Bingo province, which was located near Bizen province.
\nBizen province created one of the five most Japanese sword-forging traditions called BIZEN DEN.<\/p>\n

The swordsmiths in Bizen produced many swords during the Muromachi period as it was in the middle of the Sengoku period(Warring state period). The demand for weapons increased among strong feudal lords. It would be nice to have a piece forged in the warring state period when there was so much rivalry between warlords. The tradition of Bizen sword-forging was passed down to the swordsmiths in the Edo period.<\/p>\n

BIZEN is located near the Chugoku Mountains, where iron sands, one of the essential materials for making Japanese swords, were abundant. Furthermore, BIZEN swordsmiths had close access to Yoshi River, where they could find water and charcoal. This geological location contributed to the swordsmiths to forge high-quality refined blades. We presume BIZEN was quite active in sword-forging from ancient times. It is said that groups of swordsmiths created BIZEN DEN after the late Heian era(Late 12th century ).<\/p>\n

This blade is appraised as a Hozon Token(\u4fdd\u5b58\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:\u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, well preserved with artistic value.<\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Koshirae:\u00a0Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka(Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

This Fuchi Kashira has a simple design; a thin linear pattern is carved. Although it does not have ornamental decoration such as gold or silver inlay, you could focus on enjoying its material\u2019s texture. There are tarnishes, and some parts are worn down due to aging. We hope you would appreciate them as antique textures.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

This Menuki\u2019s motif is a combination of a turtle and mice. A proverb says turtles live a long life; therefore, turtle and turtle\u2019s shell pattern represent longevity. This animal has existed since ancient times, so people have considered it a mysterious creature. It is said the turtle was introduced as a motif for designs in the Yayoi period. So, this animal design has been familiar to Japanese people for more than 2000 years.<\/span><\/p>\n

About the mouse motif of this Menuki, it seems these mice are a family. As mice have many children, it is regarded as a symbol of fertility and prosperity for future generations. According to a theory, the belief that worships mouse as the messenger of the Daikokuten (\u5927\u9ed2\u5929, the member of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune, called Shichifukujin in Japanese) was brought to Japan from the continent. Mice have the ability to predict disasters and move to a safe place before a fire or earthquake occurs. It is said that the ancient people who saw this behavior thought the mouse was the sacred beast that knows the future.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tsuba and Habaki<\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>
\n<\/b><\/p>\n

Oval-shaped Tsuba made from iron. It has a symmetry design by combining straight and lines and curves. Same as the Fuchi Kashira, we would say it also has a relatively simple look, and it matches well with the gorgeous appearance of the scabbard.<\/span><\/p>\n

Saya<\/strong><\/span>\uff1a Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

As mentioned above, this scabbard has an attractive look thanks to its decorative technique. It seems it was painted with black lacquer, and small shiny parts are probably crushed seashells. This scabbard adds gorgeousness to the entire of this Koshirae.<\/span><\/p>\n

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNBTHK Hozon Certificate<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

NBTHK<\/span><\/a>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on Aug 27th in the 3rd year of Reiwa (2021). They appraised it as Hozon Touken, the blade worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file<\/span><\/a> for your record if you request.<\/span><\/p>\n

Registration Number : <\/span>Nigata 058491<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The Board of Education in Nigata prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword .It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho(\u9283\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho(The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
