\u00a0The Kabuto (\u515c, helmet) is a protector for the head. When people started using the Kabuto, it was initially designed for practical use. However, the principal purpose of its design has changed with time; Samurais tried to express their dignity, personality, or religion by wearing the characteristic design Kabutos. According to a theory, these unique designed Kabutos were made from the late Muromachi period to the Edo period. This type of Kabuto is categorized as the Kawari Kabuto (\u5909\u308f\u308a\u515c), and a variety of materials were used to create them. For example, animal fur, seashells, plants, and papers were used as materials for decoration.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0We classify this item as a type of the Jingasa (\u9663\u7b20). It is usually made from metal or leather, and Ashigaru (\u8db3\u8efd, infantry) and low-ranked soldiers wore it. They substituted it for the Kabuto. Since the tactics of placing infantry on the front lines became the mainstream, it was a primary matter of how the infantry gained high mobility. Therefore, they wore simple armor with minimal functionality to protect themselves, unlike the luxurious armor of high-ranked Samurais. Crests or marks were drawn on the front of the Jingasa to make it a sign for judging each affiliation. As mentioned above, commanders of Samurai enjoyed decorative elements for their Kabutos to show dignity or their belief, etcetera. In contrast to these Kabutos, the Jingasas usually have a pretty simple design. As Jingasas were treated as consumable supplies at that time, it is rare to find a good condition one. We guess it is possible that an Ashigaru wore this Jingasa.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0You see the golden mark on the front. It is a family crest and is categorized as the Maru-ni Sumitate Yotsume (\u4e38\u306b\u9685\u7acb\u56db\u3064\u76ee) pattern. It is a kind of the Meyui (\u76ee\u7d50) pattern.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u3010How To Preserve Antique Samurai Armor\/Helmets\u3011<\/strong><\/span>
\nDryness, humidity, and bad ventilation might deteriorate the condition of antique Samurai armor\/helmet. The best temperature to preserve Samurai armor\/helmet is around 20\u2103 in Celsius, and humidity should be about 60%.\u00a0 Direct sunlight should be avoided. We recommend storing armors\/helmets in a room with good ventilation. If you like to display them outside the boxes for a prolonged time, we suggest using a glass case in order for dust not to be accumulated easily. In case you don’t use a glass case, please make sure to regularly dust off\u00a0 from the armor\/helmets by using a soft brush made of delicate cloth or brush for painting.<\/span><\/p>\n
