Antique Japanese Sword Wakizashi Attributed to Late-gen Yoshisuke with NTHK Kanteisho<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Certificate<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

This blade is attributed to the work of late-gen Yoshisuke(\u7fa9\u52a9) during the Tensho era(Late Muromachi period: 1573-1592) while there is no signature. The maker\u2019s name(Yoshisuke) lasted several generations, and it started from the mid-Muromachi period and lasted until the end of the Edo period.<\/p>\n

The first-gen Yoshisuke was active during the Kosho era(1455-57), and he was the founder of Shimada school, located in the Suruga domain(today\u2019s Shizuoka prefecture). It is said that the first-gen Yoshisuke was a descendant of Bizen Ichimonji Sukemune, one of the most famous swordsmiths in Japanese history.<\/p>\n

The first-gen Yoshisuke served a powerful feudal family named Imagawa. It is said that he received his maker\u2019s name \u7fa9 from Imagawa Yoshitada. Shimada school interacted with other schools in Soshu swordsmiths living near Odawa castle in Kanagawa prefecture. The Suruga domain was vital for strong feudal lords such as Takeda, Tokugawa, and Hojo clan during the Sengoku Jidai(Warring state period: Late Muromachi period). The swordsmiths in Shimada school received many orders from these strong feudal families.<\/p>\n

This blade has a beautiful engraving as well. These engravings are most likely Sanscrit letters(\u68b5\u5b57). Many Samurai were religious, and the original owner of this blade might have shown his religious belief on his sword. Both blade and its sword mounting were appraised by NTHK, one of the most famous Japanese sword appraising organizations.<\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Koshirae:\u00a0Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka( Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

According to the certificate, this handle is made from wood. And the Raimon (\u96f7\u6587, also called Ikaduchimon) is designed at the centerline. It is a continuous geometric pattern that connects straight lines like a spiral. People regarded the thunder as a symbol of the wonders of the natural world. It is thought this design has the power that it would protect people from evil spirits. In Japan, this pattern has been used since ancient times, for example, it is seen even in some Yayoi Dokis (\u5f25\u751f\u571f\u5668, Yayoi pottery).<\/span><\/p>\n

About the Fuchi Kashira, it is made from Shakudou (\u8d64\u9285). The Shakudou is an alloy of copper and gold. It has often been used for sword mountings. Because it has rollability (easiness of processing), adhesiveness, ease of plating, and it makes the beauty of black coloring. This Fuchi Kashira has a plain design. It makes harmony with this handle\u2019s gorgeous sculptural design. <\/span><\/p>\n

\nTsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

The certificate says that the semi-three dimensional black ball-shaped decoration is the Menuki of this Koshirae. Same as the Fuchi Kashira, this Menuki is made from Shakudou. Each side of the black ball is framed with a thin metal ring; one side is with gold, and the other side is with silver. We speculate that is why this Menuki\u2019s design is determined as the Nisshoku Gessyoku Zu (\u65e5\u98df\u6708\u98df\u56f3, solar eclipse and lunar eclipse). Seeing the entire appearance of this handle, it is a collection of motifs related to celestial bodies such as lightning, the sun, and the moon; it gives us a mysterious impression.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/b>Tsuba and Habaki<\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Circle-shaped Tsuba made from iron. It has Kozuka and Kougai holes. Instead of the ornamental decorations, you would enjoy the texture of the material itself. When this Tsuba is put into the handle, it matches well with other sword mountings.<\/span><\/p>\n

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNTHK-NPO Kanteisho Certificate for the blade<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

NTHK<\/span><\/a>, also known as NPO Nihon Touken Hozon Kai, is the oldest organization for sword authentication of Japanese swords in modern times. It was established in 1910 during the post-Samurai era. They authenticated the blade on June 13th in the 3rd year of Reiwa (2021). Its sword mounting was also appraised on the same day. The purchaser will receive these original certificates as well. Registration Number : <\/span>Gunma 51700<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The Board of Education in Gunma prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword . It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho(\u9283\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho(The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
