Summary<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade is attributed to the work of Hojyu by NBTHK, the most reputable Japanese sword appraising organization in Japan.<\/span>
\nHojyu is the group of swordsmiths prosperous during the late Heian period-Nanbokucho period(late 12th-14th century) in Mutsu no Kuni(today’s Tohoku region: Northern part of Japan). We assume this blade was forged approximately during the late Kamakura-Nanbokucho period(early-late 14th century).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Hojyu swordsmiths belonged to Mogusa school, which functioned as the head branch. Mogusa school’s foundation dates back to the late 11th century when Oshu Fujiwara clan started to rule Mutsu no Kuni. And they were based in the city called Hiraizumi(\u5e73\u6cc9). There aren’t many remaining signed blades forged by Mogusa swordsmiths except Hojyu.<\/span>
\nHojyu is the most famous one among Mogusa schools.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Mutsu no Kuni had been ruled by the Oshu Fujiwara clan until Minamoto no Yoritomo(the shogun of the Kamakura government)ousted them. Many Hojyu swordsmiths moved to other parts of Japan as their master lost power. There are so many famous swordsmiths who were originally from this school, and they built the foundation of sword-forging in other parts of Japan, such as Bizen province. Hojyu swordsmiths were deeply involved in the formation of iconic Japanese sword’s characteristics.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Hojyu is written as \u5b9d(Treasure)\uff06\u5bff( Longevity) in Japanese. Because of the name, swords forged by Hojyu were believed to bring good luck and were treated as great gifts among Samurai.<\/span><\/p>\n

Naginata Naoshi\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

This type of blade is called Naginata Naoshi(\u8599\u5200\u76f4\u3057). Naginata is a traditional Japanese pole sword. According to the NBTHK authentication paper, this blade was originally Naginata and was shortened as a Katana. Naginata was once a primary weapon, but this trend changed during the Samurai period. However, it kept its presence as a Katana.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Naginata has a longer history than Katana has as a weapon. And Naginata was highly valued among Samurai families because of its history, which led them to believe it was an excellent weapon. There is a saying in Japanese sword collectors about Naginata Naoshi. It goes, “Naginata Naoshi ni Namakura Nashi, ” roughly translated as Naginata Naoshi Katana, is never dull(always sharp). <\/span>We see Homare Kizu (\u8a89\u75b5), which tells us that this blade was used in a battle. Homare means honorable, and Homare Kizu is considered a good blade characteristic that tells us its history.<\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade is appraised as a Tokubetsu Hozon Token(\u7279\u5225\u4fdd\u5b58\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:\u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, especially well preserved and high quality with artistic value.<\/span><\/p>\n

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/p>\n

Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aHabaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNBTHK TOKUBETSU Hozon Certificate for the blade (No.1014222)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0NBTHK<\/a><\/span><\/span>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on November 9th in the 2rd year of Reiwa (2019). They appraised it as Tokubetsu Hozon Touken, the blade especially worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file<\/span><\/span><\/a> for your record if you request.<\/span><\/p>\n

Registration Number :<\/span><\/strong><\/span> Tochigi 16215<\/strong>
\n\u00a0 The Board of Education in Tochigi prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword . It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho(\u9283\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho(The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
