\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

*This blade was appraised as Tokubetsu Hozon Token in last December and we are expecting to receive the original certificate in the mid May 2021.<\/p>\n

Bizen Ofafune Jyu Yokoyama Sukeharu(\u5099\u524d\u9577\u8239\u4f4f\u6a2a\u5c71\u7950\u6625) is the seventh-gen of Genzaemon Sukesada and forged swords during Tenpo-Ansei era(Late Edo period: 1831-1860). And he is the son of Yokoyama Yoshitsugu). Sukeharu is the 56th grandson of Tomonari, a renowned swordsmith in the mid-late Heian period in Bizen province(today\u2019s Okayama prefecture).<\/p>\n

Sukeharu\u2019s ancestors dated back to Sukesada school, one of the most famous schools, and flourished for generations among Osafune schools(The head branch). There were various styles forged by the generations of Sukesada during the Muromachi-Edo period. There were about 60 swordsmiths who used Sukesada as his maker\u2019s name in Samurai history. One of the most famous ones is the first-Genzaemon Sukesada, an ancestor of Sukeharu.<\/p>\n

The swordsmiths in Bizen produced many swords during the Muromachi period as it was in the middle of the Sengoku period(Warring state period). The demand for swords increased among strong feudal lords. The length of this blade is efficient and must have been easy for its owner to handle back then. The high level of craftsmanship had been passed until the Edo period, and Sukeharu is a good example.<\/p>\n

This blade is appraised as Tokubetsu Hozon certificate issued by NBTHK. This authentication paper was only given to Japanese swords, especially worth preserving by Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai(the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword). It accompanies with gorgeous sword mountings.<\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Koshirae:\u00a0Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Sabbard), Tsuka( Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0The dragon is designed for this Fuchi Kashira. A dragon is a mythical animal, and it rises high up into the sky so that people believed the dragon pattern represents glory or development. Its body is likened to nine animals: antlers are deer, the head is a camel, eyes are demons, the neck is a snake, belly is Mizuchi (\u86df, a mythical animal in Japan which looks like a snake and have a horn and four legs), scales are fish, claws are falcons, palms are tigers, and ears are cows. It was thought the dragon would reign at the top of all animals because of its odd-looking appearance.<\/span>
\n\"\"<\/p>\n

Tsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The dragon is the motif of this Menuki, same as the Fuchi Kashira. As the golden metal is applied to it, the color combination of this dragon’s gold and the Tsukamaki thread’s white makes a noble impression on this work. According to a theory, dragons and gods dwell in the clouds. Therefore, people believed clouds have magical power. In Japan, there is a belief that worships dragon is the water god. As rice cultivation flourishes in this country, water has been treated as an essential resource. The clouds bring a blessed rain, and the dragon gathered people’s faith as the water god. Therefore, we could guess that the combination of clouds and dragons is often seen.\u00a0<\/span>
\n\"\"\u00a0 \u00a0 \"\"
\nTsuba and Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0Circle-shaped iron Tsuba that has Kozuka and Kougai holes. Same as other sword mountings of this sword, this Tsuba is decorated with the dragon motif. The whole body of this dragon is colored with golden metal. It makes a beautiful contrast with the iron color of this Tsuba. According to its signature, this Tsuba’s maker is Hitotsuyanagi Tomoyoshi (\u4e00\u67f3 \u53cb\u5584), who did well in the late Edo period.<\/span>

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNBTHK TOKUBETSU Hozon \uff06 Tokubetsu Kicho Certificate for the blade<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0NBTHK<\/a><\/span><\/span>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on Nov 25th in the 47th year of Showa (1972) as Tokubetsu Kicho Certificate. And, they appraised it as Tokubetsu Hozon Touken at last year’s examination board in December. We are expecting to receive this new certificate in mid May. The purchaser will receive these original certificates as well. Registration Number :<\/span><\/strong><\/span> Osaka<\/strong> 44952<\/strong>
\n\u00a0 The Board of Education in Osaka prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword . In order to obtain this paper, the sword needs to be traditionally hand forged. With this paper, its owner can legally own an authentic Japanese sword in Japan. This paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword being shipped abroad but you can receive a copy of it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
