Antique Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Bishu Osafune Sukesada with NBTHK Hozon<\/span> Certificate<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

This blade has a signature of Bishu Osafune Sukesada(\u5099\u5dde\u9577\u8239\u7950\u5b9a). We believe it was forged in around the late Muromachi period(450-500 years old) based on its characteristic and the fact that it received Hozon certificated from NBTHK.<\/p>\n

Those who forged swords in the Bizen province(Okayama prefecture) at the end of the Muromachi Period(1492-1569 A.D) are called Matsu Bizen(Matsu mean the end). Sukesada school was one of the most famous schools and it flourished for generations among Osafune schools(The head branch). There were various styles forged by the generations of Sukesada during this period. There were about 60 swordsmiths who used Sukesada as his maker\u2019s name in the Samurai history. Bizen is the birthplace of Bizen Den, one of the most famous Japanese sword tradition along with Yamashiro Den, Soshu Den, Mino Den and Yamato Den.<\/p>\n

The swordsmiths in Bizen produced many swords during the Muromachi period as it was in the middle of the Sengoku period(Warring state period), and the demand for swords increased among strong feudal lords. The length of this blade is efficient and must have been easy for its owner to handle back then.\u00a0 It would be nice to have a piece that was forged in the warring state period, when there was so much rivalry between warlords.<\/p>\n

This sword has a Hozon certificate issued by NBTHK. This authentication paper was only given to Japanese swords, worth preserving by Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai(the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword).<\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang on purpose to prevent red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, which is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/p>\n

\u3010Other Details\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Koshirae:\u00a0Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Sabbard), Tsuka( Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Flowers and autumn insects (such as crickets and mantis) are designed for this Fuchi Kashira. Chrysanthemum and mantis, they are fall season words in Haiku (a short Japanese poem of seventeen syllables). As chrysanthemum’s petals form radially, it has been likened to the sun. That is why this flower pattern is treated as the symbol of perpetual youth and longevity or good health.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0About the mantis, this insect is generally called Kamakiri in Japanese. And it is also called “Ogami-Mushi (\u62dd\u307f\u866b),” or “Inori-Mushi (\u7948\u308a\u866b)” in Japanese. Both of these names mean a praying insect. Mantises hold their arms together, and their long wings cover their lower bodies. As this posture looks like a priest who prays to God, the mantis is likened to a “praying mantis.” Mantises lay well. Therefore mantis is considered a symbol of children.<\/span>
\n\"\"<\/p>\n

Tsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0A kind of flower is the motif of this Menuki. By using the same type of design with other sword mountings, the entire appearance has a unity.<\/span>
\n\"\" \"\"<\/p>\n

Tsuba and Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Yotsu-Mokkou-shaped Tsuba has Kozuka and Kougai holes. Several flowers are designed for this Tsuba. These plants might be Aki-no-Nanakusa (\u79cb\u306e\u4e03\u8349, the seven flowers of autumn). Aki-no Nanakusa is constituted with seven plants that were written in the Tanka composed by Yamanoue no Okura (\u5c71\u4e0a\u61b6\u826f, Japanese poet). These flowers are Hagi (\u8429, bush clover), Obana (\u5c3e\u82b1, Japanese pampas grass), Kuzu (\u845b, kudzu vine), Nadeshiko (\u64ab\u5b50, pink), Ominaeshi (\u5973\u90ce\u82b1, yellow patrinia), Fujibakama (\u85e4\u88b4, boneset), and Kikyou (\u6854\u6897, Japanese bellflower). Japanese people enjoy admiring these plants since ancient times. Although some golden metal colors applied to flowers were already flaked off due to aging, it remains its gorgeous and elegant look.\u00a0<\/span>

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNBTHK Hozon Certificate for the blade<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0NBTHK<\/span><\/a>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on Dec 2th in the first year of Reiwa(2019). They appraised it as Hozon Touken, the blade worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file<\/span><\/a> for your record if you request.<\/span><\/p>\n

Registration Number : <\/span>\u00a0Shizuoka 44959<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\n\u00a0The Board of Education in Shizuoka prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword . In order to obtain this paper, the sword needs to be traditionally hand forged. With this paper, its owner can legally own an authentic Japanese sword in Japan. This paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword being shipped abroad but you can receive a copy of it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
