Antique Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Teruyoshi with NBTHK Hozon<\/span> Certificate<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

According to NBTHK that authenticated this blade, it was forged by Teruyoshi in the late Muromachi period(450-500 years old). There were a few swordsmiths who signed as Teruyoshi(\u8f1d\u5409) and NBTHK doesn\u2019t specify which Teruyoshi forged this blade. Nevertheless, you can see a piece of history from the late Muromachi period. Please keep in mind that there are a couple of black rust spots on this blade. That is why we are selling this blade for a very reasonable price. If you like to know the detailed condition, please feel free to contact us. We will send you additional photos.<\/p>\n

When this blade was forged, Japan was in the warring state called Sengoku Jidai where there were so many rivalry and wars between regional feudal lords. The length of this blade is more than 70 cm long and must have been practical for its owner to handle it back then. It would be nice to have a piece that was forged in the warring state period.<\/p>\n

The blade comes with a beautiful set of half-Tachi style Koshirae(decorative sword mountings). If you like Sageo for this Katana, we will add it without additional charge.<\/p>\n

It comes with Hozon certificate issued by NBTHK. This authentication paper was only given to Japanese swords, worth preserving by Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai(the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword).<\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang on purpose to prevent red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, which is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/p>\n

\u3010Other Details\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Koshirae:\u00a0Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Sabbard), Tsuka( Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This Fuchi Kashira’s surface has finished with the Nanako-Ji technique. The ground was hit by the Nanako-Ji Tagane (a type of chisel used for this technique). It makes delicate fish egg-shaped protrusions on the entire surface of the Tsuba. The Nanako-Ji with the same size of particles lined up regularly makes us feel the maker’s expert skill.<\/span>
\n\"\"<\/p>\n

Tsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Yumi-Ya (\u5f13\u77e2, bow, and arrow) is the motif of this Menuki. It was once one of the classical primary weapons for Samurai. So we could imagine that this motif reminded them of battlefields. Also, as an arrow goes straight forward, lots of Samurai loved the arrow pattern. Additionally, each home displayed decorated arrows wishing that it would exorcize evil spirits in the house. This talisman is called Hamaya (\u7834\u9b54\u77e2) in Japanese, and this custom is still kept today.<\/span>
\n\"\" \"\"<\/p>\n

Tsuba and Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Aoi-shaped Tsuba that has Kozuka and Kougai holes. Four small holes are engraved at each corner, and each of them looks like a heat mark. It is called the Inome pattern. This motif has been used since ancient times. Its name means the eyes of the boar in Japanese; it is the origin of this pattern. Some people believed that the Inome design works as an amulet to protect us from evil spirits or fire. Also, it is said it would bring good luck. This pattern is often found in traditional Japanese architectures such as shrines or temples.<\/span>

\u00a0NBTHK<\/span><\/a>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on Feb 25th in the 31th year of Heisei (2019). They appraised it as Hozon Touken, the blade worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file<\/span><\/a> for your record if you request.<\/span><\/p>\n

Registration Number : <\/span>\u00a0Hiroshima 25006<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\n\u00a0The Board of Education in Tokyo prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword . In order to obtain this paper, the sword needs to be traditionally hand forged. With this paper, its owner can legally own an authentic Japanese sword in Japan. This paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword being shipped abroad but you can receive a copy of it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
