Antique Japanese Sword Wakizashi Unsigned Sukesada with NTHK Kanteisho Certificate<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

This blade is attributed to the work of Bishu Osafune Sukesada from Tensho era(1573-1593) by NBTHK, which authenticated this blade in 2020.<\/p>\n

Those who forged swords in the Bizen province(Okayama prefecture) at the end of the Muromachi Period(1492-1569 A.D) are called Matsu Bizen(Matsu means the end). Sukesada school was one of the most famous schools, and it flourished for generations among Osafune schools(The head branch). There were various styles forged by the generations of Sukesada during this period. Approximately 60 swordsmiths used Sukesada as his maker’s name in the Samura history. In that sense, the swordsmith’s name “Sukesada” worked as a kind of brand that attracted many Samurai.<\/p>\n

Bizen is the birthplace of Bizen Den, one of the most famous Japanese sword traditions, along with Yamashiro Den, Soshu Den, Mino Den, and Yamato Den.<\/p>\n

The swordsmiths in Bizen produced many swords during the Muromachi period as it was in the middle of the Sengoku period(Warring state period). The demand for swords increased among strong feudal lords. It would be nice to have a piece forged in the warring state period when there was so much rivalry between warlords.<\/p>\n

According to NTHK, this blade was heavily shortened, so the signature was cut(O-Suriage:\u5927\u78e8\u308a\u4e0a\u3052). While the main tempering line(Hamon) is Suguha(straight line), it also contains Komidare Hamon(slightly wavy line). The blade’s length is very close to Katana(60.6 cm or above), so we assume it was initially made for Katana in the late Muromachi period. Nakago<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang on purpose to prevent red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, which is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/p>\n

Koshirae: Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka( Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0It might be the Fuji-Dana (wisteria shelf) that is designed for this Fuchi Kashira. Wisteria has strong fertility and grows being entwined with other trees. Therefore, people regarded this flower as a symbol of longevity and prosperity for future generations. Also, its Japanese name Fuji (\u85e4) has the same pronunciation as another word Fuji, which is written as “\u4e0d\u6b7b,” which means immortality. That is why Fujiwara (\u85e4\u539f) family, who reached the height of glory in the Heian period (794-1185), used this motif for their family name and family crest. Besides, wisterias bloom downward. Its appearance was likened to a scene that the gods or Buddha is descending to the earth.\u00a0<\/span>

\nTsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0By looking through the gaps in the Tsukamaki thread, it is challenging to judge the motif of this Menuki. It can be seen as a part of Samurai armor. \u00a0<\/span>

\nTsuba and Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside.It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0Antique Tsuba that has Kozuka and Kougai holes. A type of plant motif is engraved at the top and downside. It might be Ichou (Ginkgo Biloba). Ichou contains lots of water; therefore, it is fire resistant. It does not quickly die even if flames burn it. Because of its strong vitality and longevity, the Ichou pattern has been considered a good luck motif. In Japan, Ichou trees are often found in shrines. People believe it as Goshinboku (tree of worship) and treat it respectfully. Also, many families enjoy using this plant pattern for their family crests. In <\/span>Japanese, there is another word that has the same pronunciation. It is written as \u201c \u7570\u671d \u201d and means a foreign country. Based on this common pronunciation, people thought the Ichou pattern shows the joy of welcoming honored guests overseas.<\/span><\/p>\n

NTHK<\/span><\/a>, also known as Nihon Touken Hozon Kai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade and sword mounting(Koshirae) on Dec 13th in the second year of Reiwa(2020). They appraised them as the Kanteisho class, the blade worth preserving for Japanese society. With this paper, its owner can legally own an authentic Japanese sword in Japan.
