Antique Japanese Sword Wakizashi Signed by Osafune Sukesada with NTHK Kanteisho Certificate<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

This blade has a signature of Bizen Osafune Sukesa(\u5099\u524d\u9577\u8239\u7950\u5b9a). According to NTHK that authenticated this blade, it was forged in Kyouhou era (1716-1736: Mid Edo period).<\/span><\/p>\n

Sukesada school was one of the most famous schools and it flourished for generations among Osafune schools(The head branch). There were various styles forged by the generations of Sukesada during Muromachi-Edo period. There were about 60 swordsmiths who used Sukesada as his maker\u2019s name in the Samurai history. One of the most famous ones is Osozaemon Jo Sukesada whose father is Hikobeinojou Sukesada.<\/p>\n

The swordsmiths in Bizen produced many swords during the Muromachi period as it was in the middle of the Sengoku period(Warring state period), and the demand for swords increased among strong feudal lords. The length of this blade is efficient and must have been easy for its owner to handle back then. The blade also comes with a beautiful set of Wakizashi Koshirae.<\/p>\n

While we can’t locate which Sukesada forged this blade, you can see great sword-forging skills from one of Sukesada during the mid Edo period. The blade has Gunome Choji Midare hamon with Koitame tsumi Jihada. It accompanies by a beautiful black lacquered scabbard.<\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang on purpose to prevent red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, which is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/p>\n

Koshirae: Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka( Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0The surface of this Fuchi Kashira was hit by the Nanako-Ji Tagane (chisel used for this technique). It makes delicate fish egg-shaped protrusions on the entire surface of the Tsuba. The Nanako-Ji with the same size of particles lined up regularly makes us feel the maker’s expert skill.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The dragon is designed for this Menuki. These dragons’ gold color remains in good condition. Initially, the dragon is an imaginary creature found in ancient traditions or myths. Furthermore, it is a symbolic beast of auspicious signs. Its body is likened to nine animals: antlers are deer, the head is a camel, eyes are demons, the neck is a snake, belly is Mizuchi (\u86df, mythical animal in Japan which looks like a snake and have a horn and four legs), scales are fish, claws are falcons, palms are tigers, and ears are cows. It was thought that the dragon would reign at the top of all animals because of its odd-looking appearance. Today still, many people appreciate the dragon motif.\u00a0<\/span>

\nTsuba and Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside.It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0Oval-shaped iron Tsuba that has Kozuka and Kougai holes. Four birds that are abstractly designed with simple shapes are arranged regularly. One of the famous bird motifs is a wild goose. The wild goose is a migratory bird that represents fall. Its pattern is also called “Karigane (\u96c1\u91d1)” and used for family crests. This bird has often been depicted in a very simplified shape: Hiragana (\u3072\u3089\u304c\u306a, a kind of Japanese letter) “he (\u3078)” shape that sometimes makes also wild goose.<\/span>

\nSaya<\/strong><\/span>\uff1a Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/span>

Kozuka<\/strong>\uff1aKozuka is a small knife stored in Kozuka Hitsu(groove of the sheath of the Japanese sword).<\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0Semi (\u8749, cicada) is designed on this Kozuka. The cicada symbolizes immortality or life after death. Cicadas live underground as nymphs and change their shapes to become adults. When it happens, they will come out to the ground, grow wings, and fly in the sky. This series of situations was likened to the figure of people who became mountain hermits and ascended to the hermit world. This insect pattern has been appreciated for its good impression.\u00a0<\/span>

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNTHK Kanteisho Certificate for the blade<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

NTHK<\/span><\/a>, also known as Nihon Touken Hozon Kai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on Dec 13th in the second year of Reiwa(2020). They appraised it as the Kanteisho class, the blade worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file<\/span><\/a> for your record if you request.<\/span><\/p>\n
