\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Moritada lived in Suono Kuni, Yamaguchi prefecture, in the late Edo period-early to Meiji period. Suono Kuni located southeast side of Yamaguchi prefecture. The signature on the tang says \u5468\u9632\u56fd\u76db\u5fe0\u9020\u4e4b(Made by Suono Kuni Moritada) on the front and \u660e\u6cbb\u4e8c\u5e74\u5df3\u4e8c\u6708\u5409\u65e5( the second year of Meiji(1869), Serpent year, February, Lucky Day on the back).<\/p>\n

When this blade was forged, it was right after the Meiji period began. Before this period, Japan was ruled by the Tokugawa shogunate (Edo government) for about 270 years until 1868. However, the Choshu domain(Yamaguchi prefecture) and the Satsuma domain(Kagoshima prefecture) made an alliance to have an emperor head of Japan. They fought against the Tokugawa side at the end of the Edo period.
\nEventually, the Choshu-Satsuma side won, and the political power was shifted from Shogun to the emperor. Many Samurais from the Choshu domain were employed as the main members of a new Meiji government.<\/p>\n

We presume this blade might have been forged for a high-class general living in Choshu province. After the Samurai period ended, we assume the demand for the sword decreased, but he still kept forging swords to keep the tradition going. We think he had a lot of tenacity during the tough time for swordsmiths.<\/p>\n

This blade has a Tokubetsu Hozon certificate issued by NBTHK. This authentication paper was only given to Japanese swords, especially worth preserving by Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai(the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword).<\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/p>\n

Koshirae:\u00a0Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Sabbard), Tsuka( Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/span><\/strong>

Tsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span>

\nTsuba and Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>

\u00a0NBTHK<\/span><\/a>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on Feb 19th in the second year of Reiwa (2020). They appraised it as Tokubetsu Hozon Touken, the blade especially worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. \n\u00a0 The Board of Education in Tokyo prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword . In order to obtain this paper, the sword needs to be traditionally hand forged. With this paper, its owner can legally own an authentic Japanese sword in Japan.
