\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Naminohira(\u6ce2\u5e73) was a family of swordsmiths that the Yamato-Den swordsmith Masakuni(\u6b63\u570b) originated in Satsuma(\u85a9\u6469) province during the late-Heian period. Swords by Naminohira before the late-Nambokucho period are referred to as Ko-Naminohira, as opposed to the family’s later work, Sue-Naminohira. They were known for having their titles with one of these letters, \u884c(Yuki) or \u5b89(Yasu).<\/p>\n

The Naminohira swords were cherished among Samurais in the marine army, especially because the name Naminohira(\u6ce2\u5e73) means “Tides are quiet.” in Japanese.
\nThe origin of the title Naminohira dates back to the family’s foundation when the founder Masakuni calmed the waves by dedicating his sword to the sea when his family from Yamato sailed to live in Satsuma. Since then, he began to wear the title “Naminohira Yukiyasu (\u6ce2\u5e73\u884c\u5b89)” – “Tides are quiet, ’tis an easy way.” From the late-Heian period until the end of Samurai times, the Naminohira family had kept the mastership for a thousand years.<\/p>\n

Yasutoshi was a swordsmith from the Naminohira family back in the late-Muromachi period. He would like to apply the authentic Yamato-Den techniques in his craft. His work appears to have features that derive from Yamato-Den; The razor-edge sharpness and exceptional strength.
\nSatsuma province had many Samurais and smiths back in the day, making it difficult for most smiths to stay relevant through the era. The Naminohira family always remained prominent in the evolving sword industry – and their work is still beloved by Katana fans to date.<\/p>\n

It is appraised as Tokubetsu Hozon certificate issued by NBTHK. This authentication paper was only given to Japanese swords, especially worth preserving by Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai(the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword). This sword comes with a beautiful set of Koshirae(decorative sword mounting).<\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/p>\n

Koshirae:\u00a0Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Sabbard), Tsuka( Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0The lion and peonies are designed for this Fuchi Kashira. This combination is a popular motif that has been appreciated since ancient times. According to a theory, this design was started to be used in the Kamakura period (1185-1333) in Japan. People thought lions had the power of the sun so that this animal would exorcize evil spirits. Also, it is said peony represents happiness, wealth, nobleness, and gorgeousness. This Fuchi Kashira is decorated with auspicious motifs.\u00a0<\/span>

\nTsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0It might be dragons that are designed for this Menuki. It looks like they twist their scaly elongated bodies. Initially, the dragon is an imaginary creature that is found in ancient Chinese traditions or myths. Its body is likened to nine animals: antlers are deer, the head is a camel, eyes are demons, the neck is a snake, belly is Mizuchi (\u86df, mythical animal in Japan which looks like a snake and have a horn and four legs), scales are fish, claws are falcons, palms are tigers, and ears are cows. It was thought that the dragon would reign at the top of all animals because of its odd-looking appearance. Since ancient times, this beast pattern has been appreciated as an auspicious symbol.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTsuba and Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0Yotsu-Mokkou-shaped Tsuba made from iron. Three people who voyage together are depicted. It seems they are looking up the moon that is engraved on the left upper side. This Tsuba might describe a scene of some narratives.<\/span>

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNBTHK TOKUBETSU Hozon Certificate for the blade<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0NBTHK, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on June 25th in the second year of Reiwa(2020). They appraised it as Tokubetsu Hozon Touken, the blade especially worth preserving for Japanese society.
