Description
It has a flat rectangular shape and is divided into six layers. A string was passed to both sides of each step, fastened with netting to prevent falls. Furthermore, the string was sandwiched between bands.
This Inro has a gorgeous appearance thanks to the Makie (蒔絵) technique. The Makie is a typical Japanese lacquer art technique developed uniquely in Japan for about 1200 years. Firstly, it needs to draw a picture with lacquer on the surface with a thin brush. Next, sprinkle the gold powder from above to show the pattern before the lacquer hardens. This technique makes an elegant and ornamental look to works, as seen in this Inro case.
You would find a lady who wears a traditional Japanese costume. It seems she is looking outside from her room and is deep in thought all by herself. Pine trees grow around the building where she is, and the same plant is also designed on the backside of this Inro. As pine trees keep their green color throughout the years by withstanding severe heat and cold, people thought this plant pattern represents eternal youth. It is said this color was appreciated as a good-luck color.
The Netsuke (根付, miniature sculpture, fastener) of this Inro has a person’s figure. He might be a character in the Kabuki (歌舞伎, a traditional form of Japanese drama).
We hope you enjoyed this description, and we wish this Inro would speak to you.
