Modern Japanese Sword Shirasaya Katana Gendaito Signed by Watanabe Shigehira

【Description】

The swordsmith, Watanabe Shigehira, forged swords in Uonuma village in Nigata prefecture. When he was 23 years old, he started to work as an apprentice for Miyairi Akihira, who was designated as a Living National Treasure in Japan.
Shigehira firstly participated in the 7th Japanese sword exhibition held by NBTHK(Nihon Bijyutu Touken Hozon Kyokai). His swords were accepted 7 times in total and selected 4 times in various awards. This exhibition is a competition where licensed modern Japanese swordsmiths submit their work and compete for their creation’s quality and skill.

We believe he forged this blade, being influenced by Nanbokucho style swords from 1334 to 1392. The looks of Nanbokucho swords would look stronger than in other periods, and the length of the blade is relatively longer with long Kissaki(tip).

Shigehira not only forged this blade but also curved the sculpture, whose design is called Kurikara Ken and Sanscrit.
Kurikara-Ken (倶利伽羅剣) is the sword that Fudo Myo-O (不動明王, acalanātha) holds with his right hand. Fudo Myo-O is one of the objects of worship in Buddhism. According to a theory, it is the incarnation of Dainichi Nyorai (大日如来, Mahāvairocana, the principal image of esoteric Buddhism). Kurikara-ken was named due to its appearance that Kurikara Ryu-O (倶利伽羅龍王, dragon) is winding around the sword. It is believed Kurikara-Ken could cut off worldly desires: Sandoku (三毒). Sandoku is the three fundamental earthly desires; Ton (貪, greed), Jin (瞋, anger, grudge), Chi (癡, delusion, complaint).

You can see the great sword forging and curving technique Shigehira left from this magnificent blade. Please enjoy its intricate work by holding it in person.

About Modern Swordsmith
There are around 150-200 swordsmiths in Japan today. To legally produce Japanese swords, one needs to pass the national exam given by the Agency for Cultural Affairs(Bunka-Cho) and receive the license. Before taking the exam, one must finish his or her apprenticeship under a licensed master for more than five years.
Those who practice Iaido(居合道) tend to use those modern swords, and there are modern Japanese sword collectors nationwide.
The modern Japanese sword makers are researching old ways to forge swords and trying to recreate ancient style swords. They are the ones who keep the tradition of Japanese history alive.
