Title: Komainu Seidou Kouro

Description
Kouro (香炉, incense burner) is made from Seidou (青銅, bronze).

Komainu (狛犬, lion-dogs) is designed at the lid. In Japan, Komainu is usually seen as a pair of stone guardian dogs at the gate of shrines or temples. It is a fantasy creature, and its appearance is similar to a lion and dog. According to a theory, the idea that the lion is a guardian beast that protects the person who sits on the throne was brought to Japan from overseas. And it is said Komainu was born as a beast statue that protects the emperor.

If you focus on the lid, you will find three heart marks at the This heart mark-shaped pattern is called Inome-Monyou (猪の目文様, boar’s eyes) in Japanese. And it is also often seen as a decorative design in shrines or temples. The Inome pattern has been being used since ancient times. Some people believed the Inome design would work as an amulet so that it would protect them from evil spirits or fire. Also, it is said it would bring good luck. This pattern is often found in traditional Japanese architectures such as shrines or temples and used Gegyo (懸魚, decoration under the roof, where the roof is jointed) or metal fittings for hiding timber joints. Komainu and the Inome pattern are deeply related to traditional Japanese architecture and religions and have been appreciated in Japan.
