Katana Koshirae for Samurai Sword (Koshirae-01)
【Overall】
【Handguard】
Yotsu-Mokkou shaped handguard with a Kozuka hole. Several plants and flowers are engraved, such as cherry blossom, bamboo, pine tree, etc. Hanabishi-Mon also can be seen on the surface. Cherry blossom is one of the seasonal things of spring, and it’s been loved since a long time. It’s believed the god of grain exists in cherry blossom therefore, this flower pattern has been treated as the symbol of a plentiful harvest. People appreciate bamboo pattern since a long time. Bamboo and pine tree are the motifs of Shouchikubai (three good luck motifs; pine tree, bamboo, and Japanese apricot). As pine trees keep their green color by withstanding severe heat and cold, it has been considered a symbol of good luck. Also, some people believe mountain hermit lives at pine trees and eat its nuts. Based on this belief, it’s said pine tree represents longevity. Hanabshi-Mon is the combination of four lozenges in this case. This pattern has been used since Heian period.
【Scabbard】
The scabbard is painted with glossy red lacquer. The red color is regarded as the color of the sun, or blood. So, this color symbolizes the power of life.
【Handle】
The handle is covered with stingray skin to reinforce the handle and not slip when its owner holds it. The black thread includes the handle with Hishi-Maki technique, a kind of Tsukamaki method.
【Pommel】
The pommel is decorated with Itomaki-Mon. Itomaki means spool in Japanese. The thread extends from each spool. It’ said these long threads represent the wish for longevity. This motif has also been favored for Noh (classical Japanese dance-drama) costume and women’s Kimono (traditional Japanese costume).
