Title: Japanese lacquer box-Kiku Makie Bako

*As this item is an antique, please check each photo and ensure its condition.

Description
This box has a rectangular shape with a rounded corner. This box is a combination of three cases. As it could be separated, it is useful to organize items based on their volumes. This box is covered with a white wooden box.

This box is designed with good-luck patterns such as chrysanthemum and Hanabishi-Monyou (花菱紋様). A long time ago, the chrysanthemum was used as a medicine for long life in China, and it was brought to Japan with this thought in the Nara period (648-781). This flower symbolizes fall, and people appreciate it very much since ancient times. As its petals form radially, the chrysanthemum was likened to the sun. Some people believed its sacred power. That is why this flower pattern has been treated as the symbol of perpetual youth and longevity or good health. Its gorgeous shape makes a luxurious and elegant look for this work. Hanabishi-Monyou is also a famous design. According to a theory, it was initially introduced to Japan from the continent. It is a continuous pattern that is abstracted petals shaped. In the Heian period (794-1185), this design was widespread, especially among aristocrats. They enjoyed using this pattern for their clothes and furnishings.

This item is useful to store your belongings. You could also display it to enjoy as a part of the interior decoration in your room.

*Makie……A typical Japanese lacquer art technique developed uniquely in Japan for about 1200 years. Firstly, it needs to draw a picture with lacquer on the surface with a thin brush. Next, sprinkle the gold powder from above to show the pattern before the lacquer hardens. This technique makes a gorgeous and elegant look to works.

There is a crack at the edge of the second box. If you would like to know the detail, please ask us.
