Early Edo Period Antique Samurai Helmet Tetsusabiji Sanjyuniken Suji Kabuto with Kicho Shiryo Certificate

Period: Early of the Edo period

Prime Material: Iron

Suji Kabuto consists of many small riveted iron plates to form its shape. This helmet has Sanjyuni (thirty two  in Japanese) iron plates. Suji means a stripe in Japanese, and you can see 32 stripes in this helmet. A high-class Samurai might have owned this helmet. There is no signature on this helmet, but the surface is Tetsusabiji style, which only applied lacquer for paint base for the iron not to get rusty. It looks less shiny than normal lacquered surface.

Please keep in mind that the Shikoro part (gold plates part) was made after the Meiji period according the appraisal.

Certification:Kicho Shiryo Certificate

The cerificate will be issued by The Association for the Research and Preservation of Japanese Helmets and Armor, which is the most trusted Japanese armor appraiser in Japan. Kicho Shiryo means a precious article. It is ranked as a fourth highest of five rankings.

This helmet was authenticated on October 10th 2021 as Kicho Shiryo and the paper will mention the armor was made in the early Edo period. We are expecting to receive this authentication paper paper by the end of  December or early January.

An English translation of the certificate is available on request. We won’t charge any additional fee.
