Title: Antique Tsuka for Samurai Sword (Koshirae-06)

*As this item is an antique, please check each photo and ensure its condition.

【Handle】
Tsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword. The handle is covered with stingray skin to reinforce the handle and not slip when its owner holds it. The black thread covers the handle with the Hishi-Maki technique, a kind of Tsukamaki method.

【Pommel】
The Hane (羽, feather) pattern is designed. People thought bird feathers were clean and would not stain with dust; therefore, it has been used in various daily tools or patterns for Kimono (traditional Japanese costume). The feathers of birds, which have been regarded as auspicious symbols, were popular. Especially, peacocks’ gorgeous feather pattern was appreciated. Not only actual birds such as crane and hawk but also imaginary creatures, Houou (鳳凰, Fenghuang) have been used as motifs for sword mountings. It could consider the feather pattern was also one of the favorable designs among Samurai.

【Hilt Decor】
The man who rides on the bream holding the fishing pole is designed. This combination reminds us that he is Ebisu (恵比寿). Ebisu God is a member of Shichi-Fuku-Jin (七福神, the Seven Gods of Good Fortune). Ebisu God has a rod and a sea bream, so that initially, it was the God of fishing. Ports will be done well by the comings and goings of ships. Safe voyages will bring profitable businesses; therefore, Ebisu became famous as the God of business. Also, in several areas, Ebisu is believed to the God of good match or wealth.
