Description
This antique sword stand is suitable to exhibit a Tachi sword. You could also put a short sword on the lower side.

About the design, this sword stand is decorated with auspicious motifs. For example, you would find that bamboos are depicted on the pole. As this pole is gently bent, its shape seems to be a natural plant. Bamboos grow neatly towards the sky, and it is vital so that this motif represents nobility and strength. Besides, the bamboo breaks straight, but its content is hollow. Some people have thought that it showed innocence. According to a foreign legend, the Houhou (鳳凰, Fenghuang) eats bamboo fruits; therefore, bamboo has been considered a sacred plant. Also, as it keeps its green color even in cold winter, people thought the bamboo pattern shows eternity and longevity. We would say that the bamboo pattern is one of the most familiar designs for Japanese people since ancient times.

On the board part, you would see a big pine tree is designed. As pine trees keep their green color throughout the years by withstanding severe heat and cold, people thought this plant pattern represents eternal youth. Furthermore, its color is called the Tokiwa-Iro (常盤色, evergreen trees’ dark green color with brown), and pine trees have another name “Tokiwa-Gi (常盤木).” Tokiwa means immutability, so the Tokiwa-Iro is a color that praises green with a wish for longevity and prosperity. The pine tree design gives us an elegant and noble impression; it might be another reason that people love this motif.

We think all these motifs are painted with the Makie (蒔絵) technique. The Makie is a typical Japanese lacquer art technique developed uniquely in Japan for about 1200 years. Firstly, it needs to draw a picture with lacquer on the surface with a thin brush. Next, sprinkle the gold powder above to show the pattern before the lacquer hardens. This technique makes a gorgeous and elegant look for works, as seen in this sword stand.

You could enjoy this item as a sword stand or an interior decoration in your room.
