Antique Japanese Sword Wakizashi Signed by Seki Kanetomo with NBTHK Tokubestsu Hozon Certificate

【Description】

This blade was signed by Kanetomo (兼友) in Seki village, located in Mino province (today’s Gifu prefecture). The maker’s name Kanetomo lasted a few generations, from the late Nanbokucho period to the late Muromachi period (mid-14th-late 16th century). We believe this Wakizashi was made by the late-gen Kanetomo from the late Muromachi period.

The first-gen Kanetomo was known as an apprentice or a child of Kaneuji (Shizu Saburo), one of the most famous swordsmiths during the Nanbokucho period. He originally signed Kanetomo (包友) and resided in Yamato province (today’s Nara prefecture). And he moved to Mino province by following his master, Kaneuji. After Kanetomo (包友) moved to Mino province, he changed his maker’s name to Kanetomo (兼友). His mater, Keneuji, and Kanetomo belonged to the school called Tegai (手掻), one of the most famous schools in the region.

After he moved to Mino province, the first-gen Kanetomo belonged to a prestigious school called Sanami (三阿弥), one of the seven schools in Seki village in Mino province (Today’s Gifu prefecture). Those seven schools are known as Seki Kaji Shichi Ryu (関鍛冶七流). And the generations of Kanetomo resided, forging high-quality blades for Samurai who lived in this province.

The MINO swordsmiths style, also known as MINO-DEN, basically has the TOGARI(Pointed shapes protruding from the Hamon )in a classic straight line and random temper line with some white Utsuri. MINO-DEN had its origin from YAMATO-DEN in the late KAMAKURA period(1280-1330). It flourished in the MUROMACHI period(1333-1573) and continued until the EDO period(1603-1868).

MINO-DEN exceedingly prospered during Sengoku Jidai(Warring State period) due to the high demand for weapons. And the location of Mino province beat others. Akechi Mitsuhide controlled Mino province, and Nobunaga Oda ruled Owari province, and Tokugawa Ieyasu was the lord of Suruga (Neighboring areas). There was high demand from those powerful feudal lords and their retainers. Furthermore, so many wars occurred between the Kanto region and the Kyoto area. Mino is located in the middle, making feudal lords feel convenient to order swords from MINO-DEN. The blades forged in MINO provinces also had the reputation of their practical design and sharpness. Many feudal lords demanded swords forged in the Mino province. The tradition of excellent sword forging skills had been passed to the Edo period.

This blade is appraised as a Tokubetsu Hozon Token(特別保存刀剣) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:日本美術刀剣保存協会). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, especially well preserved and high quality with artistic value.

NakagoNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.

Koshirae: Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka( Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).

The theme of the sword mountings of this Koshirae is the dragon. You would find the dignified figure of dragons on the Fuchi Kashira, Menuki, and Tsuba.

Initially, the dragon was an imaginary creature found in ancient foreign traditions and myths. Furthermore, it is regarded as a symbolic beast of auspicious signs. Its body is likened to nine animals: antlers are deer, the head is a camel, eyes are demons, the neck is a snake, the belly is Mizuchi (蛟, a mythical animal in Japan that looks like a snake and has a horn and four legs), scales are fish, claws are falcons, palms are tigers, and ears are cows. It was thought that the dragon would reign at the top of all animals because of its odd-looking appearance.

Fuchi-KashiraA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.

If you focus on the side of the Fuchi part, you will find that there is an engraved inscription. It is written as follows: 大森 英秀 (Ōmori Eishu). It shows this Fuchi Kashira’s maker name. Eishu was born in 1730 and was active in the middle of the Edo period as a metalworker for sword mountings. It is said that he favored carving figures of lions, animals, birds, flowers, and people. Also, he was said to have invented a three-dimensional drawing of waves called the Ōmorinami (大森波, a kind of wave pattern). While we cannot say for sure this Fuchi Kashira’s maker was exactly this Eishu, there is a possibility because its design was one of his favorites.

Tsuka and MenukiTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.

Tsuba and HabakiTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.

In Japan, there is a belief that worships dragons as water gods. Since rice cultivation has flourished in this country, people always treat water as an essential resource. We estimate such a religious idea might have been related to the popularity of dragon motifs.

In addition, as seen on this Tsuba, dragon patterns have often been depicted with clouds. Clouds bring blessed rain and snow, and their movements significantly affect the day’s weather. Due to its supernatural power, a theory says that gods, spirits, and dragons dwell in the clouds. In this way, it is understandable that many Samurai appreciated this sacred beast designs not only because of its appearance but also its auspiciousness.

Saya Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.

*Please keep in mind that there is trace of restoration on this Saya. If you like to see the detailed condition, please feel free to contact us.

Authentication PaperNBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Certificate for the blade (No. 1019912)

NBTHK, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on March 10th in the 5th year of Reiwa (2023). They appraised it as Tokubetsu Hozon Touken, the blade especially worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file for your record if you request.
