Antique Japanese Sword Wakizashi Signed by Muneysohi with NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Certificate

【Description】

This blade was forged by Bushu Efu Enjyu Taro Muneyoshi(武州江府延寿太郎宗義) in March, the seventh year of Kaei(1854). Based on the signature, he lived in Edo city when he forged this blade. Bushu Efu means Edo.

Muneyoshi was born in Iwami Koku(Today’s Shimane prefecture) and moved to Tanba province(Today’s Hyogo). He was originally an apprentice of Masuda Kiyonari(増田清成) and first signed as Kiyotake. And then, he changed it to Enjyo Taro Muneyoshi. He served Tanba Shinoyama clan as an Okakaekaji, meaning he exclusively forged swords for this clan in his career. He also made blades in Edo city at the end of the Edo period, also known as Bakumatsu. He belonged to Dotanuki school, a prestigious sword school whose linage goes back to Enjyu school. It is said that Muneyoshi was a descendant of an Enjyu school swordsmith.

Enjyu(延寿) is the prestigious school’s name that flourished during the late Kamakura period-Nanbokucho period(Early-Late 14th century). Enjyu school was founded by Kunimura(国村), who is said to have been the grandson of Rai Kuniyuki from Yamashiro province(Today’s Kyoto prefecture).

When Muneyoshi was active in sword-forging, Japan experienced a historically dramatic period called Bakumatsu. It was the end of the Samurai era, and there were so many civil wars among feudal lords. We presume Muneyoshi forged this blade for Samurai who might have participated in these wars.

This blade has a Tokubetsu Hozon certificate issued by NBTHK. This authentication paper was only given to Japanese swords, especially worth preserving by Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai(the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword). This sword has beautiful Midare Hamon and Jigane.

【 Blade】
Cutting Edge Length(Nagasa)39.6  cm (15.6  inches)
Curvature(Sori)0.8 cm(0.31 inches)

Hamon:
The crystalline structure which forms along the cutting edge of a blade as a result of the hardening process
Jimon(Jihada):
visible steel surface pattern created by folding and hammering during forging process

NakagoNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang on purpose to prevent red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, which is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.

Habaki Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.

Authentication PaperNBTHK TOKUBETSU Hozon Certificate for the blade

NBTHK, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on November 9th in the second year of Reiwa (2020). They appraised it as Tokubetsu Hozon Touken, the blade especially worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file for your record if you request.

Registration Number :  Tochigi 21721
The Board of Education in Tochigi prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword . It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho(銃刀剣類登録証). Bunkacho(The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
The sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
This paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.
