Antique Japanese Sword Wakizashi Signed by Minamoto Morimasa with NTHK Kanteisho Certificate

【Description】

Izumi no Kami Minamoto Morimasa(和泉守源守正) is a former name of Senjyuin Morikuni(千手院盛國).
Morimasa is a swordsmith who was active in the late Kanbun era-Genroku era (approx.300-330 years ago). He was originally from Mino province, one of the famous sword-forging places in Samurai history.

Later on, he moved to Edo(Today’s Tokyo ) to work for Izumi no Kami Kaneshige(和泉守兼重) as an apprentice. Izumi no Kami Kaneshige was one of the most renowned swordsmiths in the early Edo period. Other apprentices Kaneshige hired were Nagasone Kotetsu and Kazusanosuke Kaneshige, who were known for their excellent sword-forging skills. They all forged in the same school, improving their technique. It is said that Morimasa forged swords on behalf of his master Kaneshige and his signature resembles his master’s. There aren’t so many remaining swords signed by Morimasa today.

Morimasa was also known as Edo Senjyuin because he was a descendant of Noshu Akasaka Senjyuin, one of the most prestigious schools in Mino province.

This blade is in relatively good condition and comes with the beautiful sword mountings. NTHK issued Kanteisho(Authenticated paper) this year.

【 Blade】
Cutting Edge Length(Nagasa)51.5 cm ( 20.27 inches)
Curvature(Sori)1.0 cm( 0.39 inches)

Hamon
The crystalline structure which forms along the cutting edge of a blade as a result of the hardening process
Jimon
visible steel surface pattern created by folding and hammering during forging process

NakagoNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang on purpose to prevent red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, which is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.

Koshirae: Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka( Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).

Fuchi-KashiraA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.

This Fuchi Kashira might be made from copper. Although it does not have distinctive designs, its glossy brown color makes a color combination with Tsuka’s black color.

Tsuka and MenukiTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.

It is challenging to judge what the motif is for this Menuki. It seems each Menuki has combined two small pot-shaped parts and are coiled with ropes. It could consider that some daily tools might be designed.

Tsuba and HabakiTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.

Circle-shaped iron Tsuba that has Kozuka and Kougai holes. Several holes are engraved; these irregular-shaped holes might depict any motifs such as water drops.

Saya Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.

Authentication PaperNTHK Kanteisho Certificate for the blade

NTHK, also known as Nihon Touken Hozon Kai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on Jan 17th in the third year of Reiwa(2021). They appraised it as the Kanteisho class, the blade worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file for your record if you request.
