Antique Japanese Sword Wakizashi Signed by Masayuki with NBTHK Hozon Certificate

【Description】

This blade was signed by Hoki no Kami Masayuki(伯耆守正幸). Judging from the NBTHK authentication paper and signature, the original signature of Masayuki part was cut due to Suriage (size adjustment). However, the forth-gen Masayoshi (the son of Masayuki) proved that this blade had been signed by his father, Masayuki. The signature also says that the fourth-gen Masayoshi is the the one that shortened the blade (Kiritsuke Mei). According to available records, Masayuki was active during 1772-1817 (The end of the Edo period).

Masayuki was born in the 18th year of the Kyoho era(1733)as the first son of the second-gen Ijichi Masayoshi(伊地知正良). Masayuki first called himself Masayoshi(third-generation Masayoshi) after taking over his father’s school. And in the first year of Kanei(1769), he received Hoki no Kami (伯耆守) as an official title and changed his maker’s name to Masayuki. He passed down the maker’s name, “Masayoshi” name to his first son. Masayuki died at the age of 86 in the first year of 1818. We believed he reached the pinnacle of his career when he forged this blade and you can see excellent quality.

Masayuki was one of the most famous swordsmiths in the Satsuma domain(Kagoshima prefecture) in the late Edo period, apart from Okuyamato no Kami Motohira. It is said that Masayuki was passionate about training his students. There were 60 swordsmiths who learned the sword-forging technique under Masayuki.

Satsuma province had a high ratio of Samurai population compared to other parts of Japan. And they are famous for their military power ruled by Shimazu clan. We assume a swordsmith needed to be very skilled to stay active and popular in this demanding place. Masayuki was one of them.
Masayuki’s father served the Satsuma domain. It was highly likely that Msayuki also forged swords for this domain, considering his prestigious position.

This blade is appraised as a Hozon Token(保存刀剣) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:日本美術刀剣保存協会). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, well preserved with artistic value.

NakagoNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.

Koshirae: Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka(Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).

Fuchi-KashiraA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.

This Fuchi Kashira has a simple look. There are minor damages and color changes due to aging. We feel these textures show us this Fuchi Kashira’s  history. We hope you will enjoy it as an antique texture.

Tsuka and MenukiTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.

This Menuki’s motif is the Ebi (海老, shrimp). As these shrimps have thick and long feelers, they are more likely to be categorized as the Iseebi (伊勢海老, spiny lobsters).

According to a theory, Japanese people already ate shrimps in the Heian period (794-1185). However, it was expensive for ordinary citizens, so only the nobility and high-class people could enjoy it. A theory says that people started using the shrimp as a good-omen pattern in the Muromachi period (1336-1573)), and some of them used it as a design for their family crests. In the Samurai’s society, as shrimp is covered with a hard shell, it was thought that the shrimp represents the figure of a brave Samurai. A shrimp’s color also influenced this idea. As you know, shrimp shells have bright red color after a shrimp is heated. This figure was also regarded as a figure of a Samurai who wore armor.

Also, the shrimp has been likened to an older adult because of its long feelers. Also, shrimps actively jump even though they are bowed. That is the reason why the shrimp pattern is treated as a symbol of perpetual youth and longevity.

Tsuba and HabakiTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.

Same as the Fuchi Kashira, this Tsuba has a relatively simple appearance. But irregular-shaped holes make a unique design. As it is not decorated with ornamental decorations such as gold or silver inlay, you could enjoy the texture and the color of the metal material itself.

Saya Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.

Authentication PaperNBTHK Hozon Certificate for the blade (No.342865)

NBTHK, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on March 28th in the 8th year of Heisei (1996). They appraised it as Hozon Touken, the blade worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file for your record if you request.
