Antique Japanese Sword Wakizashi Signed by Kanekuni with Tokubetsu Hozon Certificate

【Description】

This blade was signed by Etchu no Kami Fujiwara Kanekuni (越中守藤原包國), who was active during the early Edo period (1661-1681: Kanbun-Enpo era). His birth name was Tsutsui Hisaemon, and he is also known as the father of Tsutsui Norimitsu,

Kanekuni is said to have been a descendant of a swordsmith who belonged to *Tegai school in Yamato province (Today’s Nara prefecture).

He was an apprentice of *the first-gen Osaka Tanba no Kami Yoshimichi, one of the most prestigious swordsmiths in Osaka during the early Edo period.

There were records of him forging blades in both Settsu (Osaka) and Yamato region (Nara prefecture). His creations were famous for their sharpness and categorized as Wazamono, sharp blades in Kaiho Kenshaku and Kokon Kajibiko, two famous books that demonstrated the comparison in sharpness of each swordsmith’s blades.

About Tegai school
There were five prestigious schools, including Tegai, during the Kamakura-Nanbokucho period (Late 12th-late 14th century). They are called Yamato Goha(大和五派); Senjyuin(千手院), Tegai(手掻), Taima(当麻), Hosho(保昌) and Shikkake school. They served politically powerful monks and temples in Nara, such as Todaiji temples.

They were initially forging swords for military monks who became powerful due to the government’s policy. Monks needed many weapons as there were many political rivalries between influential temples, and they needed strong weapons like swords to protect themselves. During this time, Tegai school or other Yamato sword schools met the requests from monks. They also forged blades for Samurai hired by those monks during their heyday. Kanekuni was a descendant of a member of this prestigious school.

About the first-gen Osaka Tanba no Kami Yoshimichi
The first-gen Osaka Tanba no Kami Yoshimichi was a famous swordsmith who resided in Settsu domain (Today’s Osaka). He was the child of the first-gen Kyo Tanba no Kami Yoshimichi, a renowned sword maker in Kyoto. The first-gen Osaka Tanba no Kami Yoshimichi initially forged swords under his father’s school in Kyoto but moved to Osaka and founded Osaka Mishina school. Kanekuni learned excellent sword-forging techniques from Yoshimichi. Some of Kanekuni’s works have a close resemblance to his master.

This blade is appraised as a Tokubetsu Hozon Token(特別保存刀剣) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:日本美術刀剣保存協会). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, especially well preserved and high quality with artistic value.

*Please keep in mind that there are a couple of partial black rust on the blade. If you like to know the detailed condition, please feel free to contact us.

【 Blade】
Cutting Edge Length(Nagasa)56.1 cm (22.1 inches)
Curvature(Sori)1.0 cm (0.39 inches)

Hamon
The crystalline structure which forms along the cutting edge of a blade as a result of the hardening process
Jimon(Jihada)
visible steel surface pattern created by folding and hammering during forging process

NakagoNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.

Koshirae: Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka(Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).

Fuchi-KashiraA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.

Seashells and water plants are designed for this Fuchi Kashira. These seashells are engraved semi-three-dimensionally, and their shapes seem to be freshwater clams. This Fuchi Kashira’s design depicts the underwater world. Water weeds are colored with golden paint, and this coloring adds decorativeness to this work. Seashell is called Kai (貝) in Japanese. Because of its pronunciation, the seashell has another meaning. There is a word Yarigai (やりがい, worthwhile). As a part of this word has the same accent as Kai (貝 is read as Gai in some cases), Japanese people found this meaning. Also, since seashells are sturdy and combined only with their pair, people thought it represented a robust defense. Due to these meanings that inspire warriors who go to the battlefields, Samurais might have loved this motif.

Tsuka and MenukiTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.

As we cannot see the entire shape of this Menuki, it is challenging to judge the motif. You would see there are gold-colored parts and black parts. Regarding Fuchi Kashira’s design, you saw that it was related to a sea creature. Therefore, possibly, this Menuki’s motif is also associated with the same theme. If so, we guess that the figure looks like a sphere with many short legs might express a crab.

Tsuba and HabakiTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.

Oval-shaped Tsuba that has Kozuka and Kogai holes. The petal-shaped pattern is evenly engraved, and it looks like one big flower as a whole, such as a chrysanthemum. A long time ago, the chrysanthemum was used as a medicine for obtaining a long life on the continent, and it was brought to Japan with this thought in the Nara period (648-781). Chrysanthemum symbolizes fall, and people have appreciated it very much since ancient times. As its petals form radially, the chrysanthemum has been likened to the sun. That is why this flower pattern is treated as the symbol of perpetual youth and longevity or good health.

Saya Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.

Authentication PaperNBTHK TOKUBETSU Hozon Certificate for the blade (No. 1015157)

NBTHK, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on Feb 25th in the 3rd year of Reiwa (2021). They appraised it as Tokubetsu Hozon Touken, the blade especially worth preserving for Japanese society.  The purchaser will receive these original certificates. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file for your record if you request.
