Antique Japanese Sword Wakizashi Signed by Hiroshige with NBTHK Tokubestsu Hozon Certificate

【Description】

This blade was forged by Shitahara Jyu Hiroshige(下原住広重). Shitahara is the name of the area in Hachioji city in Tokyo area today where he created this blade. According to NBTHK that authenticated this blade, it was forged approximately in the early Edo period (Early-Mid 17th century). We made a phone call to them to confirm it.

Hiroshige belonged to the Bushu Shitahara school, located in today’s Tokyo(Hachioji city). It is said that Yamamoto Norishige founded the school, and it thrived from the end of the Muromachi period to the late Edo period (Late 16th century to Late 19th centnury).

Shitahara Kaji is the group of swordsmiths under the Hojo clan’s auspicious, powerful feudal line during the late Muromachi period. After the Toyotomi clan destroyed the Hojo clan in the Azuchi Momoyama period, Shitahara started to serve the Tokugawa clan as Okakae Kaji, swordsmiths exclusively working for a specific feudal family. Most of the Shitahara swordsmith’s real sir name was Yamamoto. They especially flourished during the late Muromachi period-early Edo period.

They kept forging for the Tokugawa clan until the end of the Edo period. Among the Bushu Shitahara group, Hiroshige was one of the most famous ones. The maker’s name, Hiroshige, lasted for several generations.

This blade is appraised as a Tokubetsu Hozon Token(特別保存刀剣) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:日本美術刀剣保存協会). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, especially well preserved and high quality with artistic value.

NakagoNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.

Koshirae: Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka( Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).

Fuchi-KashiraA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.

This Fuchi Kashira has a simple look. It is made of silvery metal, and it does not have any decorative engravings. There are minor damages such as dents and scratches due to aging. We think these are the proofs that this Fuchi Kashira has long passed with a long history of owners.

Tsuka and MenukiTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.

Seeing from the gaps of the Tsukamaki thread, we would judge that the motif of this Menuki is the combination of two roosters. The chicken motif is used for Menuki as the good-omen design, which represents prosperity. Also, people enjoy this bird motif as it tells us about the morning.

The chicken appeared in the Kojiki (古事記, Records of Ancient Matters). In this chronicle, once upon a time, Amaterasu-Ōmikami (天照大神/ 天照大御神, the goddess who controls the sun) hid in the Amanoiwato (天岩戸, cave made of rocks), and the world became completely dark. Gods discussed how to get her out of the cave. And they decided to attract her attention with the beautiful crowing of chickens. The operation was successful, and the world regained the sun again. Based on this tradition, it is said that this bird was regarded as a messenger of Amaterasu-Ōmikami. That is why chickens have been treasured in the Shinto (神道) belief. According to a theory, a Torii (鳥居, a gateway at the entrance to a Shinto shrine) is a perch for chickens.

There are sword mountings with designs related to the owner’s religious beliefs. This Menuki might be one of these works.

Tsuba and HabakiTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.

Yotsu-Mokkou -shaped Tsuba that has a Kozuka hole. It is said that its origin is the shape of eggs. When a quince (it is written 木瓜 in Japanese) is cut into round slices, its cross-section looks similar to this shape; therefore, it was named Mokkougata Tsuba. Yotsu-Mokkougata (四ツ木瓜形, a combination of four Mokkou shapes) Tsuba is often seen, same as this Tsuba.

About the design, you would find little birds flying in the sky, and flowers are engraved on the bottom. We are unsure what flowers they are, but we could see that golden coloring is applied to leaves and stems. You would find several dents on the surface. We consider these are the traces of its long history. So, we hope you will enjoy them as antique textures.

Saya Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.

Authentication PaperNBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Certificate for the blade (No.1016611)

NBTHK, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on Dec 3rd in the 3rd year of Reiwa (2021). They appraised it as Tokubetsu Hozon Touken, the blade especially worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file for your record if you request.
