Antique Japanese Sword Wakizashi Signed by Fuyuhiro with Tokubetsu Hozon Certificate

【Description】

This blade was signed by Fuyuhiro (冬廣) during SHINTO era (the early-mid Edo period:1596-1763), according to NBTHK’s appraisal.

It is said that the first generation Fuyuhiro was the son of the second-gen Soshu Hirotsugu. The second-gen Soshu Hirotsugu was one of the most well-known swordsmiths in the Soshu region(today’s Kanagawa prefecture). The first-gen Fuyuhiro moved to Wakasa province(today’s Fukui prefecture) after learning sword forging techniques/tradition from his master (Approx. 1460: mid-Muromachi period). Firstly, he focused on forging swords with the Soshu Den tradition, one of the five well-established sword-forging traditions (Gokaden). However, he gradually mixed it with Bizen tradition, another tradition of the five.

According to historical documents, the swordsmith’s name Fuyuhiro was a hereditary name and it lasted 17 generations from the Muromachi period(1460-)to the end of the Edo period(-1868).

During the Sengoku period(Warring state period), the generations of Fuyuhiro forged swords for high-class Samurai or feudal lords because of the popularity and the high demand for weapons. There are also records of the swordsmith name Fuhiro forging in Bizen, Bingo, Izumo, and Hoki province in the Edo period. You can see excellent craftsmanship by observing this blade closely.

This blade also has Horimono(the inscription) of Sanscrit letter that means Fudo Myo-O, who is one of the objects of worship in Buddhism. According to a theory, it is the incarnation of Dainichi Nyorai (大日如来, Mahāvairocana, the principal image of esoteric Buddhism).

This blade is appraised as a Tokubetsu Hozon Token(特別保存刀剣) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:日本美術刀剣保存協会). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, especially well preserved and high quality with artistic value.

Curvature(Sori)  1.0 cm( 0.39 inches)

Hamon
The crystalline structure which forms along the cutting edge of a blade as a result of the hardening process
Jimon(Jihada)

NakagoNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.

Koshirae: Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka( Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).

Fuchi-KashiraA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.

On the Kashira part, you see a man riding a horse. It looks he is gazing at the mountain. This mountain is probably Mt. Fuji. Its Japanese name is written as 富士山 (Fuji-San). It could be said that Mt. Fuji is a symbolic existence that represents the landscape of Japan. Its motif has also been appreciated as an auspicious design since ancient times. A theory says that its Japanese name 富士 was associated to不死 (pronounced as Fuji, and means immortality); therefore, some people thought Mt. Fuji design represents longevity. In another theory, it was also compared to another Japanese word 無事 (pronounced as Buji, and means safe). In this idea, people used this motif to pray for good health and the family’s safety. In this Fuchi Kashira, as this man seems he is on a journey, he might pray for the protection of his trip.

Tsuka and MenukiTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.

It is challenging to judge the exact motif of this Menuki. We guess it might be a kind of leaves. The leaves are folded and appear to have an elegant shape like birds’ feathers.

Tsuba and HabakiTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.

Same as the Fuchi Kashira, this Tsuba’s theme is also a figure painting. You would find a Samurai who wears armor and two other men sitting in front of him. It seems this Tsuba was initially decorated with several colors such as gold and silver. These colorings made an ornamental look of the work.

KozukaKozuka is a small knife stored in Kozuka Hitsu(groove of the sheath of the Japanese sword).

A Kogatana (小刀, small knife) is stored into the Kozuka. A blade-like design is engraved on this Kogatana. It looks it is a double-edged sword. We guess that it might be the Kurikara Ken (倶利伽羅剣). It is said Fudo Myo-O (不動明王) brings this sword. Fudo Myo-O is a protective god in Buddhism, particularly Japanese Shingon Buddhism. This god was also known as a god of wars. As there is a Horimono of the Bonji (梵字, Sanskrit) on this Fuyuhiro Wakizashi blade, this Kogatana might also have had engraved a religious motif.

Saya Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.

Authentication PaperNBTHK TOKUBETSU Hozon Certificate for the blade (No. 1015369)

NBTHK, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on May 24th in the 3rd year of Reiwa (2021). They appraised it as Tokubetsu Hozon Touken, the blade especially worth preserving for Japanese society.  The purchaser will receive these original certificates. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file for your record if you request.
