Antique Japanese Sword Wakizashi Attributed to Kanesaki with NTHK Kanteisho Certificate

【Description】

This blade is attributed to Mino Kanesaki(美濃 兼先) from the Tensho era(1573-1592: late Muromachi period) according to NTHK that authenticated this blade. Kanesaki is categorized as Sueseki, which refers to the sword makers from Mino province at the end of the Muromachi Period (Late 16th Century).

The MINO swordsmith’s style, also known as MINO-DEN, basically has the TOGARI(Pointed shapes protruding from the Hamon )in a classic straight line and random temper line with some white Utsuri. MINO-DEN had its origin from YAMATO-DEN in the late KAMAKURA period(1280-1330). It flourished in the MUROMACHI period(1333-1573) and continued until the EDO period(1603-1868).

MINO-DEN especially prospered during Sengoku Jidai(Warring State period) due to the high demand for weapons. And the location of Mino province beat others. Akechi Mitsuhide controlled Mino province, and Nobunaga Oda ruled Owari province, and Tokugawa Ieyasu was the lord of Suruga (Neighboring areas). There was high demand from those powerful feudal lords and their retainers. Furthermore, so many wars occurred between the Kanto region and the Kyoto area, and Mino is located in the middle, making feudal lords feel convenient to order swords from MINO-DEN. The blades forged in MINO provinces also had the reputation of its practical design and sharpness. Many feudal lords demanded swords forged in the Mino province. It would be nice to own the blade made during this warring state period.

NakagoNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.

Koshirae: Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka( Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).

Fuchi-KashiraA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.

Some plants are designed for this Fuchi Kashira. At the Fuchi part, you would find a fruit that grows at the thin branch. By seeing the shapes of the fruit and leaves, we think it is a Kaki (柿, Japanese persimmon). The gold paint is applied to these leaves, and the color of the fruit part is probably copper itself. Since persimmon trees have a long life, Japanese people thought that the persimmon motif represents longevity. Also, another theory says that the Japanese name of persimmon Kaki was associated with the word Kaki-Atsumeru (かき集める, gather). So, this idea says the persimmon design would gather happiness. This Fuchi Kashira’s design might have been chosen based on these auspicious meanings.

You could also find another plant motif at the Kashira part. It might be pine trees, and it is also a kind of auspicious pattern. A view says it represents prosperity and longevity, same as the persimmon design.

Tsuka and MenukiTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.

Seeing from the gaps of the Tsukamaki thread, this Menuki’s motif is Samurais. It seems two warriors are designed for each Menuki. We think this Menuki depicts Samurais who are on the battlefield because they wear the battle costume and are running with a sword in their hands. Although there are damages due to aging, it still shows us warriors’ heroic figures. This type of motif might have encouraged its owner by showing Samurais’ brave look.

Tsuba and HabakiTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.

You would find a combination of eight holes next to the Nakago (茎) hole. It is the Hachiyou (八曜) pattern which is a kind of the Hoshi (星, star) design. As its name implies, each circle represents a star. Stars have been worshipped as a holy existence that controls fate. Since each star moves in a fixed orbit, people could know the position during hunting or voyage or know the agriculture season. That is, stars have a deep relationship with people’s daily life. With time, stars came to be treated as a design, and some people arranged it for their family crests. The Hachiyou pattern is one of them. The former owner of this sword might have been related by blood to the family who used this crest.

There are various types of Hoshi Mon, such as three stars, seven stars, and nine stars as this work. Three stars design is called the Mitsu-Boshi (三つ星) in Japanese, and it means the Kachi-Boshi (勝ち星, winning star). For warriors who lived on the battlefields, it is understandable that many Samurais loved such an auspicious motif.

Saya Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.

Authentication PaperNTHK-NPO Kanteisho Certificate for the blade

NTHK, also known as NPO Nihon Touken Hozon Kai, is the oldest organization for sword authentication of Japanese swords in modern times. It was established in 1910 during the post-Samurai era. They authenticated the blade on December 12nd, the 3rd year of Reiwa (2021). The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file for your record if you request.
