Antique Japanese Sword Katana attributed to Bishu Osafune Tadamitsu with NTHK Kanteisho

【Description】

Summary

This blade is attributed to Bishu Osafune Tadamitsu (備州長船忠光) in the Tensho era (the Azuchi Momoyama period). Osafune is one of the most prosperous schools in Bishu (備州) during the Muromachi period. And Bishu (備州) is a larger area in today’s Okayama&Hiroshima prefecture, which consists of Bizen (備前), Bitchu (備中), and Bingo (備後).

The maker’s name Tadamitsu was used for about 120 years from 1469- 1591 (Late Muromachi- Azuchi Momoyama period), and there were a few generations. We asumme this blade was forged by the late gen Tadamitsu based on the era this blade was thought to be forged.

Those who forged swords in the Bizen province (Okayama prefecture) at the end of the Muromachi Period (1492-1569 A.D) are called Matsu Bizen (Matsu means the end). Tadamitsu school was one of the most famous schools, and it flourished for generations among Osafune schools.

The swordsmiths in Bizen produced many swords during the Muromachi period, as it was in the middle of the Sengoku period(Warring State period). The demand for weapons increased among strong feudal lords. It would be nice to have a piece forged in the warring state period when there was so much rivalry between warlords. It was possible that this blade was ordered by a Samurai and he might have carried it in a battlefield.

The History of Bizen Osafune School
It is said that Osafune school was founded by Mitsutada (光忠), who was active during the mid-Kamakura period. Bizen Osafune school was the biggest one of all other schools in Bizen province, and they received many orders from feudal lords or renowned Samurai. They were called Osafunemono and beloved by Samurai warriors.

Among the swordsmiths who belonged to this school, Nagamitsu, Sanenaga, and Kagemitsu are known as Osafune Sansaku, the three renowned Osafune swordsmiths. There are also four other prominent swordsmiths who were from Bizen Osafune school. They are called Osafune Shiten-no, the four masters of Osafune school. Their names are Nagamitsu, Kanemitsu, Nagayoshi, and Motoshige.

BIZEN is located near the Chugoku Mountains, where iron sands, one of the essential materials for making Japanese swords, were abundant. Furthermore, BIZEN swordsmiths had close access to Yoshi River, where they could find water and charcoal. This geological location contributed to the swordsmiths forging high-quality refined blades. We presume BIZEN was quite active in sword-forging from ancient times. It is said that BIZEN DEN was created by groups of swordsmiths there during the late Heian era (Late 12th century ). These ancient swordsmiths in Bizen province are called Ko-Bizen (Old Bizen) swordsmiths. By inheriting the sword forging techniques from Ko-Bizen swordsmiths, the Bizen Osafune school flourished from the mid-Kamakura period.

*Please keep in mind that there is a few Kitae Kizu and the black rust on this blade. If you like to see more detailed condition, please feel free to contact us.

【Blade】
Cutting Edge Length (Nagasa)51.2 cm (20.1 inches)
Curvature (Sori)1.2 cm (0.47 inches)

Hamon
The crystalline structure which forms along the cutting edge of a blade as a result of the hardening process.
Jimon(Jihada)
visible steel surface pattern created by folding and hammering during forging process

KissakiKissaki is the tip of the Japanese sword.

NakagoNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.

Koshirae:Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya (Scabbard), Tsuka (Handle), Tsuba (Handguard).

Fuchi-KashiraA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.

Tsuka and MenukiTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.

We assume this motif of this Menuki is the Batta (バッタ: grasshopper). It is said that grasshoppers have been regarded as a symbol of good luck, prosperity and freedom since old times. This grasshopper has golden antennae and tails.

Tsuba and HabakiTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.

Saya Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.

You would find the figures of flying birds. While we are unsure what kind of birds they are, we estimate Kari (雁, wild goose).  The wild goose is a migratory bird that represents autumn. Because of its unique call, it is known as “a bird that carries good luck and good news,” meaning that it carries a message with its ancestors and brings good news. This bird was incorporated into designs for sword mountings and family crests. We would say this bird motif has been familiar to Japanese people since ancient times. We would mention about crows in the Menuki’s description.
