Antique Japanese Sword Tanto Signed by Tada-Aki NBTHK Hozon Certificate

【Description】
Yamamoto Tadayuki is a swordsmith who served the Tottori domain. Tottori domain was ruled by a famous feudal clan named Ikeda family during the Edo period.
According to NBTHK, this blade was forged at the end of the Edo period(Keio era) when Tokugawa’s military government was dismantled. The original owner of this Tanto might have seen the moment when Samurai’s life changed forever.

Japanese swords under the blade length of 30 cm (11.6 inches) are generally called TANTO. It was originally used as a supplemental weapon for Samurai on horseback, who used a pole weapon or long sword in the Kamaura-Muromachi period. Samurai aimed at an unprotected area of his enemy’s armor while having to fight with close distance.
During the Edo period(1603-1868), Tanto’s design became more elaborate and decorative because Samurai enjoyed the long-lasted peaceful time, and Tanto became a symbol of social status.

This sword has a Hozon certificate issued by NBTHK. This authentication paper was only given to Japanese swords, worth preserving by Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai(the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword).

It has beautiful Hamon(tempering line) and comes with a beautiful Koshirae(scabbard&sword fitting).

【Other details】

Tsuba and HabakiTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.

Oval-shaped plane design Tsuba. It has a glossy black color.

Fuchi-KashiraA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.

This Fuchi Kashira is decorated with a cherry blossom pattern. Cherry blossom is one of the seasonal things of spring, and it has been loved for a long time. Its pattern is designed not only for sword mountings but also for Kimono (traditional Japanese costume) or furnishings. Some people believed that the god of grain exists in cherry blossom; therefore, this flower pattern has been treated as a rich harvest symbol.

Tsuka and MenukiTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.

The motif of this Menuki is challenging to identify. Due to the slender body and scales, it might be dragons that are designed. In Japan, this sacred creature motif has been appreciated as an all-purpose auspicious pattern.

SayaSaya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword

KozukaKozuka is a small knife stored in Koduka Hitsu(groove of the sheath of the Japanese sword).

We could see the man who wears armor and holds a weapon that looks like a spear. It is considered this Kozuka depicts a scene of the battle on the sea.

Authentication PaperNBTHK Hozon Certificate for the blade

NBTHK, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on August 14th in the 27th year of Heisei(2015). They appraised it as Hozon Touken, the blade worth preserving for Japanese society.
