Antique Japanese Sword Katana Unsigned Shigaseki with NBTHK Hozon Certificate

【Description】

This blade is attributed to the work of a Shigeseki swordsmith. Shigaseki swordsmiths were originally from Mino province(Shiga prefecture) but moved to Shiga city in Owari province(today’s Nagoya) during the mid-Muromachi period. And they prospered until the late Muromachi period. Based on the appraisal of NBTHK, we believe this blade was forged about 500 years ago(the Mid-Late Muromachi period). Their style are very close to Mino style swords called MINO-DEN but has some special characteristics.

The MINO swordsmiths style, also known as MINO-DEN, basically has the TOGARI(Pointed shapes protruding from the Hamon )in a classic straight line and random temper line with some white Utsuri. MINO-DEN had its origin from YAMATO-DEN in the late KAMAKURA period(1280-1330). It flourished in the MUROMACHI period(1333-1573) and continued until the EDO period(1603-1868).

MINO-DEN especially prospered during Sengoku Jidai(Warring State period) due to the high demand for weapons. And the location of Mino province beat others. Akechi Mitsuhide controlled Mino province, and Nobunaga Oda ruled Owari province, and Tokugawa Ieyasu was the lord of Suruga (Neighboring areas). There was high demand from those powerful feudal lords and their retainers. Furthermore, so many wars occurred between the Kanto region and the Kyoto area, and Mino is located in the middle, making feudal lords feel convenient to order swords from MINO-DEN. The blades forged in MINO provinces also had the reputation of their practical design and sharpness. Many feudal lords demanded swords forged in the Mino province. Also, many swordsmiths in Mino province moved to other areas of Japan like Shigaseki by being hired by feudal lords.

This sword has a Hozon certificate issued by NBTHK. This authentication paper was only given to Japanese swords, worth preserving by Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai(the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword). This blade comes with gorgeous sword mountings, including Tsuba, Menuki, and Fuchi Kashira.

【Blade】
Cutting Edge Length(Nagasa)  70.8 cm(  27.87 inches)
Curvature(Sori)1.5 cm(0.59  inches)

Hamon
The crystalline structure which forms along the cutting edge of a blade as a result of the hardening process
Jimon(Jihada)
visible steel surface pattern created by folding and hammering during forging process

NakagoNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang on purpose to prevent red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, which is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.

【Other Details】

Koshirae: Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka(Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).

Fuchi-KashiraA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.

People wearing a classical style costume are designed for This Fuchi Kashira. Although some golden metal parts were already flaked off due to aging, it still retains its gorgeous look. There is a signature of this Fuchi Kashira’ s maker at the side of Fuchi. The surface of this Kashira is decorated with the Nanako-Ji technique. The ground was hit by the Nanako-Ji Tagane (魚子地鏨, chisel used for this technique). It makes delicate fish egg-shaped protrusions on the entire surface of the Tsuba. The Nanako-Ji with the same size of particles lined up regularly makes us feel the maker’s expert skill.

Tsuka and MenukiTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.

The motif of this Menuki might be the Kabura-Ya (鏑矢). Ya (矢) means an arrow in Japanese. Kabura-Ya is a type of arrow attached to Kabura (鏑, a kind of weapon) to the tip of an arrow. Kabura-Ya whistles when it is shot. Therefore, it was used as a signal on the battlefield to notify the start of a battle. In Japan, we can find it in traditional events such as Yabusame (流鏑馬, horseback archery) today. Also, it is enjoyed as a good-omen interior that is called the Hamaya (破魔矢). People believe this sacred arrow will ward off evil.

Tsuba and HabakiTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.

Oval-shaped Tsuba that has Kozuka and Kougai holes. The golden metal is applied to these holes. This Tsuba’s edge is framed with gold-colored metal. Same as Fuchi Kashira, this Tsuba’s surface is decorated with the Nanako-Ji technique. Also, people and trees that are designed for this Tsuba have the same style as Fuchi Kashira.

SayaSaya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.

Authentication PaperNBTHK Hozon Certificate for the blade

NBTHK, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on August 28th in the second year of Reiwa (2020). They appraised it as Hozon Touken, the blade worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file for your record if you request.
