Antique Japanese Sword Katana Unsigned Kanetoshi with NTHK Kanteisho Certificate

【Description】

This sword was forged by Tegai Kanetoshi(手掻包俊) in the Kyotoku era(1452-1455: Mid Muromachi Period), according to NTHK that authenticated it last year.He forged swords in the Yamato region (Today’s Nara prefecture). The swords forged in this area are known as Yamato-Den style, one of the five most famous sword traditions in Japanese history.

There were five prestigious schools in the Yamato region. (Senjyuin, Shikkake, Taima, Tegai, Hosho school) Yamato-Den originally started from Senjyuin school at the end of Heian period.

Each school belonged to a politically powerful temple. And there aren’t many signed swords left today. They would believe that their signature might be disturbing when representing those higher powers. To stay humble and respectful toward their master, they kept the sword anonymous, although experts could tell who had made them.

It is said that Tegai Kanenaga started this school in the Kamakura period. Tegai school belong to Todaiji temple and provided sword for warrior monks.

This blade is categorized as Koto blade, which was made between the Early Heian Period towards the Warring States’ end (794-1595 A.D.)
Those blades were likely to be used in Samurai’s real lives, so their designs had to fit the way they used the sword.
The blacksmithing technique wasn’t fully developed yet in this era, so the KO-TO blades contain gold, silver, and other metals, making the surface pattern of Koto intricate and beautiful.

You can see beautiful Jigane and traditional Suguha(straight tempering) Hamon on this blade.

NakagoNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang on purpose to prevent red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, which is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.

According to NTHK, the signature was cut due to Osuriage(大磨り上げ), shortening the size of the blade dramatically . Based on Nakago, this blade was shortened at least three times in the past.

Koshirae: Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Sabbard), Tsuka( Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).

Fuchi-KashiraA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.

Tsuka and MenukiTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.

Tsuba and HabakiTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.

SayaSaya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.
