Antique Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Yoshikuni with Tokubetsu Hozon Certificate

【Description】

Summary

This blade was signed by Taira Yoshikuni (平義国) during the Keio era (1865-1868: The end of the Edo period), according to its NBTHK’s appraisal. The signature also indicates that he mainly resided in Seishu, located in today’s eastern part of Mie prefecture.

And he forged this blade in the house of Noshu Seki Kaneyoshi (濃州関兼吉宅), who was a well-known swordsmith in Mino province. This signature indicates that Yoshikuni and Kaneyoshi interacted with each other even though they lived in different places. It also suggests that Yoshikuni dedicated himself to improving his craftsmanship by traveling to another part of Japan.

Background

Japan enjoyed a relatively peaceful time from the early Edo period to the mid-Edo period(the 1600s-1760s) because of the stable economy and the powerful government run by Tokugawa Shogunate. Many Samurai didn’t have many opportunities to utilize his Katana sword in public or on battlefields during this time. Thus, they carried their swords more as a symbol of their social status. The demand for swords decreased accordingly compared to the previous Warring state period called Sengoku Jidai. (1467-1600)

However, toward the end of the Edo period(1764-1876), the Japanese sword’s role changed dramatically. With the poverty spreading in Japan, there were so many riots initiated by the civilians. Japanese sword started to play an essential role in maintaining public safety.

Pressure from foreign countries to open Japanese borders also forced Samurai to order strong-looking swords to survive this tumultuous time. We believe many swordsmiths including Yoshikuni, made great efforts to forged high-quality, practical swords for their masters to prepare for battles.

There was a civil war between Tokugawa’s military government and the new Meiji government at the end of the Edo period. That means the original owner of this Katana might have seen the moment when Samurai’s life changed forever. This blade has a strong looking and must have been practical to use in that demanding time.

It is appraised as a Tokubetsu Hozon Token(特別保存刀剣) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:日本美術刀剣保存協会). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, especially well preserved and high quality with artistic value.

NakagoNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.

Koshirae: Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka(Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).

Fuchi-KashiraA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.

The surface of this Fuchi Kashira is decorated with the Nanako-Ji (魚子地) technique. The ground is hit by the Nanako-Ji Tagane (魚子地鏨, chisel used for this technique). And it makes delicate fish egg-shaped protrusions.

The theme of this Fuchi Kashira’s design is the combination of dragons and clouds. You would find their figures on both Fuchi and Kashira parts. Golden paint is applied to these dragons. Clouds bring blessed rain and snow, and their movements significantly affect the day’s weather. Due to its supernatural power, a theory says that gods, spirits, and dragons dwell in the clouds. In Japan, a religion worships the dragon as a water god. It might be one of the reasons why the combination of dragon and cloud motifs is often seen even in sword mountings.

Tsuka and MenukiTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.

Seeing from the gaps of the Tsukamaki thread, we estimate the motif of this Menuki is a Gunbai (軍配) which is placed sideways. It is a tool that is related to the Samurai culture. Its shape is an Uchiwa (団扇, Japanese fan) shape. The fan was brought to Japan from the continent in the Nara period (710-794). A theory says that Uchiwas were used in the court or the aristocracy back then. In addition, after the Ohnin-Bunmei era (応仁・文明年間, 1467-1487), military commanders used Gunbai-Uchiwa (軍配団扇), which is made of leather or iron. They encouraged their subordinates by using it. Also, it was used for ordering the arrangement of an army: For example, the placement of troops, the date and time of the advance, and retreat. It is the origin of the Gunbai, which Sumo (相撲, Japanese wrestling) referees use to judge victory or defeat.

Tsuba and HabakiTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.

Same as the Fuchi Kashira, this Tsuba is also designed with the dragon motif. The figure of a dragon in flight is sculpted, with its body peeking out between the clouds. If you focus on the right hand of this dragon, you will find it brings a ball-shaped object in its hand. It is the Nyoi Houju (如意宝珠, Cintāmaṇi); a fantasy jewel that fulfills any desire and gives out treasure, clothes, food, and drinks. Moreover, it heals illness and suffering, removes evils, purifies muddy water, and prevents disasters. It is said this magical item is taken from the brain of the dragon king.

Initially, the dragon is an imaginary creature found in ancient foreign traditions or myths. Furthermore, it is regarded as a symbolic beast of auspicious signs. Its body is likened to nine animals: antlers are deer, the head is a camel, eyes are demons, the neck is a snake, the belly is the Mizuchi (蛟, a mythical animal in Japan that looks like a snake and has a horn and four legs), scales are fish, claws are falcons, palms are tigers, and ears are cows. It was thought that the dragon would reign at the top of all animals because of its odd-looking appearance. As seen in this work, many sword mountings have dragon designs. We think it proves lots of Samurai favored this dignified beast motif.

Saya Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.

Authentication PaperNBTHK TOKUBETSU Hozon Certificate for the blade (No. 1013493)

NBTHK, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan.
