Antique Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Yasushige with Tokubetsu Hozon Certificate

【Description】

This blade was forged by Kishu Jyu Fujiwara Yasushige(紀州住藤原安重) during the early-mid Edo period according to the NBTHK’s appraisal and the signature. Kishu, also known as Owari, is the name of the place he lived when forging this blade. Fujiwara is a common last name back then.

According to historical records, Yasushige was active in sword-forging during the Kanbun-Genroku era(1661-1704: early-mid Edo period). There aren’t many remaining works created by him today. We assume it is partly because he dedicated most of his career to helping his master in Kishu domain (Today’s Wakayama prefecture).

We believe there was a chance Yasushige forged swords for Samurai who served Kishu Tokugawa clan in this region. as the Kishu domain was under the clan’s control during the early-mid Edo period. The Tokugawa clan controlled the central government(Bakufu), and Kishu Tokugawa clan was considered the second-highest authority, including Owari Tokugawa and Mito Tokugawa clan. These three clans are called Tokugawa Gosanke.

One of the most famous swordsmiths in Kishu domain during the early-mid period is Nanki Shigekuni(南紀重国). Yasushige’s work has some resemblance to that of Shigekuni. He might have been influenced by this great swordsmith who resided in the same domain.

This blade is appraised as a Tokubetsu Hozon Token(特別保存刀剣) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:日本美術刀剣保存協会). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, especially well preserved and high quality with artistic value.

*Please keep in mind that there is a small black rust on the Mune near the tip of the blade. If you like to know the detailed condition, please feel free to contact us.

【 Blade】
Cutting Edge Length(Nagasa) 70.0 cm(27.56 inches)
Curvature(Sori) 1.4 cm( 0.55 inches)

Hamon
The crystalline structure which forms along the cutting edge of a blade as a result of the hardening process
Jimon(Jihada)
visible steel surface pattern created by folding and hammering during forging process

NakagoNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.

Koshirae: Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka( Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).

Fuchi-KashiraA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.

Dragons are designed for this Fuchi Kashira. The golden metal is applied to these dragons and makes gorgeous appearances. Dragons lie their slender bodies in a coil. Each scale is carefully curved; it shows us its maker’s high-quality skill. If you focus on the Fuchi, the dragon coils its body around the sword. This design is the Kurikara Ken (倶利伽羅剣). It is said Fudo Myo-O (不動明王) brings this sword. Fudo Myo-O is a protective god in Buddhism, particularly Japanese Shingon Buddhism. This god was also known as a god of wars.

Initially, the dragon is an imaginary creature found in ancient traditions or myths. Furthermore, it is a symbolic beast of encouraging signs. Its body is likened to nine animals: antlers are deer, the head is a camel, eyes are demons, the neck is a snake, belly is Mizuchi (蛟, mythical animal in Japan which looks like a snake and have a horn and four legs), scales are fish, claws are falcons, palms are tigers, and ears are cows. It was thought that the dragon would reign at the top of all animals because of its odd-looking appearance.

Tsuka and MenukiTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.

Seashells are the motif of this Menuki. Various types of designs use seashells. It is a single shell and a combination of several different kinds of shells that are used. The seashell pattern is often designed with a seaside scene or wave pattern. You would feel the refreshing atmosphere of summer. Bivalves, especially clam, its shells cannot be combined with any other clam’s frame; therefore, its pattern represents happy marriage.

Seashell is called Kai (貝) in Japanese. Because of its pronunciation, the seashell has another meaning. There is a word Yarigai (やりがい, worthwhile). As a part of this word has the same accent as Kai (貝 is read Gai in some cases), Japanese people found this meaning. Also, since seashells are hard and combine only with their pair, people thought it represented a robust defense. Due to these meanings that inspire warriors who go to the battlefields, Samurais might have loved this motif.

*Please keep in mind that this Tsuka Maki is quite aged. If you like to have it replaced to new Tsuka Maki, we will be happy to do it without additional charge.

Tsuba and HabakiTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.

Oval-shaped Tsuba made from iron. Same as Fuchi Kashira, this Tsuba is decorated with the dragon motif. It seems this giant dragon is flying in the sky. Its impressive appearance makes us feel dignity. According to a theory, the dragon dwells in the clouds. Clouds bring rain, that is, blessed rain. In Japan, there is a belief that worships dragon as a water god and is called Ryujin Shinkou (竜神信仰). Since rice cultivation has been flourished in this country, water is always an essential resource. So that the dragon motif has been familiar to Japanese people since a long time ago; it might be a reason why this beast pattern is often found even in sword mountings.

Saya Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.

Authentication PaperNBTHK TOKUBETSU Hozon Certificate for the blade (No.1015130)
