Antique Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Tsunanobu with Hozon Certificate

【Description】

This blade was signed by Hashu Yonezawa Jyu Akama Tsunanobu (羽州米沢住赤間綱信) in November, the 6th year of the Tenpo era (1835: The end of the Edo period). Hashu is the province’s name located in today’s Yamagata and Akita prefecture. It is also known as Dewa Koku (出羽国). Yonezawa was the biggest city in this province. Hashu Yonezawa Jyu means he forged this blade in this specific place. Many Japanese swordsmiths signed his signature with where he created his work.

Akama Tsunanobu’s birth name was Kisaburo (喜三郎). It was common for most Japanese swordsmiths to use a different maker’s name from his real name. He learned sword-forging techniques from Kato Tsunahide (加藤綱英) in Edo city.  Tsunahide (綱英) was an older brother of Choshinsai Tsunatoshi (長寿斎綱俊), one of the most famous swordsmiths at the end of the Edo period. Tsunahide and Tsunatoshi had learned excellent craftsmanship from Suishinshi Masahide (水心子正秀).

We assume that Tsunanobu was allowed to use a letter of his master’s name 綱 after completing his apprenticeship. In Japanese culture, an apprentice was often allowed to use a part of his master’s name after being an independent swordsmith to show respect.

Initially, Tsunanobu lived in Edo city after finishing his apprenticeship under Tsunahide but moved to Yonezawa. He was active in sword-forging during the Tenpo era (1830-1844). It is said that he was one of the most renowned swordsmiths in Yonezawa city during the late Edo period.

This blade is appraised as a Hozon Token(保存刀剣) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:日本美術刀剣保存協会). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, well preserved with artistic value.

Curvature(Sori)  1.54 cm( 0.60 inches)

NakagoNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.

Koshirae: Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka( Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).

Fuchi-KashiraA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.

The Inome (猪の目, boar’s eye) pattern is designed on the Fuchi. The Inome pattern has been used since ancient times, and it looks similar to the heart mark. This design was named as its shape looks identical to a boar’s eye figure. Some people believed that the Inome design would work as an amulet to protect them from evil spirits or fire. Also, it is said it would bring good luck. This pattern is often found in traditional Japanese architectures such as shrines or temples and used Gegyo (懸魚, decoration under the roof, where the roof is jointed) or metal fittings for hiding timber joints.

Tsuka and MenukiTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.

Dragon is the motif of this Menuki. Initially, the dragon is an imaginary creature found in ancient traditions or myths. Furthermore, it is regarded as a symbol of auspicious signs. Its body is likened to nine animals: antlers are deer, the head is a camel, eyes are demons, the neck is a snake, belly is the Mizuchi (蛟, mythical animal in Japan which looks like a snake and have a horn and four legs), scales are fish, claws are falcons, palms are tigers, and ears are cows. It was thought that the dragon would reign at the top of all animals because of its odd-looking appearance. This beast design is often found in sword mountings. It shows how it was popular among Samurais.

Tsuba and HabakiTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.

Oval-shaped Tsuba that has Kozuka and Kougai holes. You would find a man on the right side. It looks he wears a kind of exotic traditional costume. He is looking up, and there are clouds in the sky. We think a giant pine tree is designed on the left side.

Saya Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.

Authentication PaperNBTHK Hozon Certificate for the blade (N0. 3026392)

NBTHK, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on May 24th in the third year of Reiwa (2021). They appraised it as Hozon Touken, the blade worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file for your record if you request.
